Title: 180 Gallon Starphire tank Upgrade + Fish Room
Post by: Wall_Tank on April 18, 2011, 20:17:12
Ok, this weekend officially kicks off the insanity.   Relocated the washer and dryer to make room for my fish room...

180 Gallon 3 sided Starphire Display tank
75 Gallon Sump
75 Gallon Frag Tank
2 x 40 Gallon Breeders.  1 for Fish Q-tine, and 1 for Coral and invert Q-tine.
Fragging Bench and Cabinets for storage.
Walling everything off, too keep the installation cleaner looking.

I have a 100gallon Rubbermaid stock tank coming (Largest that will fit past the basement door)  to be my temporary tank during the build........Temp tank inspired by LazyLivin, just not planning on it taking a year.

Open Space for Fish Room.......Of course I haven't cleaned up yet.

Now that's what I am talking about. Nothing stands in the way of the true reefer.

I sure hope it won't take a year, your clothes will really smell by then.

Now that's what I am talking about. Nothing stands in the way of the true reefer.

The fun started a couple of weeks ago, when I discussed the plan with my wife.........hmmm where can I put the washer and dryer.   I guess we'll have to clean the storage shelves out.    Other than that, it didn't take much convincing.

Quick Conceptual Layout.   Was going to do this in Google Sketchup......that would be too much like work though.  I think I'll stick to simple 2D and plans in my head :hmmmm:

For those who have seen my current in wall tank.  I will be doing more of a cabinet built into the wall.  With my 90 gallon tank, not having front access to the tank was a bit of a pain.   So I will have front access in this tank.

Decided to order Rock from http://www.marcorocks.com (http://www.marcorocks.com/) Going with all dry rock, so I'm going to get some of this rock cycling soon.   Not going to re-use the old rock...... unless I a soak it in acid and bake it out.

Marco Rocks are from old dead reefs that have long been dry.   This is all dead coral skeleton that is well erroded.   This is quite poreous and open rock.   I also ordered some of their rock cut flat, to sit against the bottom.  That will solve my bare bottom tank.   Here are some photos.

One of the larger pieces.....between 8" and 10" in diameter

Brian,
any diamond coated blade would work to saw the the rock. like a tile blade or concrete blade. if u had a rock of much size you could probably
try a brick & block retail business. they usually have a fairly large saw set up for sawing limestone to custom sizes. also a granite & marble place
might have a saw also. i personally could saw thru about 6" rock with my saws. but i am an hour or so north of most every one.

Cutting slices of small live rock like bread would make great frag plugs.

Post by: buckeyereefer on May 02, 2011, 12:47:06
yes that would work nicely. wouldn't have to be live rock.    :smiley-happy112:  is someone in the market for a tilesaw now ??

Since 2004.  The DSB is that old too.   But I've had my share of sand diggers, so they kept it stirred up.    That pink Hammer in the lower left of the tank is one of the first corals that I bought in 2004 from Phishy, when he operated out of his house.   I had about killed it, was a single polyp the size of a pencil eraser........finally figured out how to maintain a reef tank, was able to grow it back.

What fun.   Everything transferred to the temp tank.   I know my serpent star lost a leg in the battle...... not sure, think it got trapped under a rock.   All fish and such accounted for.  Although i'm worried about the Royal Gramma, when I caught him and got him in his new home, he had his mouth flared and all of his fins stretched.......just floating in the current.   Either he was playing dead, or I gave him a  heart attack.  I was able to move him out of the current so he was able to get some cover.

Tank Nearly empty

New Home for a few weeks.  I need to get the skimmer moved yet, then get a light fixture up.   I left the frag tank up......but I'm going to need to move it, I'll probably just plumb it back into the temp tank pump.

Lights and skimmer operating.  Had to make a makeshift controller panel.   Also a top down shot with some better color.   With the brighter lights, the fish are a starting to come out of hiding.   Went ahead and put a MP40 on the side for better flow.   I just need to move the frag tank over, then I can start tearing the wall out.

Frag Tank moved and plumped in.   Got the CA reactor online too.....   It's amazing how many silly wires have been wrapped around the tank over the years.   Everything now out of the way for the wall to come out.  Going to clean and epoxy coat the floor in the fish room.

What did you cut the rock with?
I have access to a 14" stihl rescue saw, that I can help cut rock with. Using a diamond tip concrete blade (which i also have access to) makes quick work of making medium sized rocks flat bottomed.

No.  My tank will is being built by Marineland.....  The name on the drawings was United Pet Group.   It's kind of interesting who owns who now.....

Marineland is owned by United Pet Group which is owned by Spectrum Brands.

Stand framing is about complete.   This tank sits at 45" from the groung, which is 3.5" lower that my previous tank.    The stand is leveled, end to end it was about 3/8" out.   The bottom of the stand is coated with Fiberglass Resin..... (idea stolen from Lazy)      Carpet is cut out and re-tacked.....that took all day most of the day yesterday.    I should have just paid someone to come in and re-stretch the carpet, but what fun is that.

I haven't decided on the center bracing, I want two in the front for the cabinet panels, but I'll probably only put one on center in the rear.  I just need to be able to get my 75 gal sump in there..

Now for the cabinet doors and trim.

While I wait for a tank, I'm playing around with my rock.  I have some rock in a tank cycling, so these are just cocepts right now.  The rock is Marco Rocks, it stacks great.  I'm also glad I bought the flat cut rock to sit on the bottom of the tank.   Here is a classic two stacks look.

I'm going to call tomorrow morning to see.  I ordered this through Jack's......the plus is that I didn't pay a specific shipping charge, I'm sure the minus is that I get to wait for Jacks truckload shipment of tanks.

Tank is at the Jack's Warehouse, we have decided that due to the size I will pickup there......which is cool, since that is just around the corner from my house.  I'm going to take off and pick it up early afternoon.   Jack's will help get it in my truck.   Just could use a few hands getting it into the basement.

Question about your cut flat rock.  Are you placing directly on glass or putting a substrate like sand under it?

Rock will sit flat on the bottom.  I'll probably put some silicon for feet to keep it from slipping.   I was going to go Bare Bottom, but now I'm leaning toward just a thin layer of larger particle sand.

Thanks again guys, and let me know if I can help you guys down the road.

How did the plumbing come out yesterday?
Title: Re: 180 Gallon Starphire tank Upgrade + Fish Room
Post by: Wall_Tank on July 11, 2011, 08:49:12
How did the plumbing come out yesterday?

Skinning the tank stand with Oak Plywood took a little longer than expected, plus I re-leveled the tank.   It was 3/32 out of level end to end, so now it's about 1/32 out of level.    I got the sump drilled for the 2" bulkhead, and put a 1" bulk head in for a drain for water changes.   I also got my sump baffles cut out.      I just didn't get to the plumbing.

Normally when I drill my tanks, I just clamp a piece of wood to the underneath side of the glass and drill away.     This time I decided to drill the glass half way from each side.....   (mental note).......drill from the inside 1st.    I drilled from the outside first......sticking my head in the 75 gallon tank was fun to line up the second cut.

But it all worked out.

Well power is back on, everything is fine.  Here are the updated photos.

Again, stand is leveled and skinned.  The skinning technique is the same that Lazy used in his build.   Corner trim and doors will come later.

I still have about 40 lbs of rock to add to this, it's in a small tank cycling right now.

(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi681.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv174%2FWall_Tank%2F180%2520Gallon%2520Starphire%2520Build%2FDSC_1051.jpg&hash=c3100a75330696b9bb05c9d82e2e35921874cc8c)

I've been using acrylic baffles in my sumps for a while now.....I've never had any problems.   But then the baffles are just to direct water, they are not holding a different level of water.   One thing that has always given me trouble was keeping the bubble trap clean.  So this time I made the center baffle removable.   I didn't get a good shot of just the sump, but it will be a very simple design.  Mechanical filter area, DSB and Macro take up the most volume, then a bubble trap and finally return pump.   I'll be using an external skimmer.

Plumbing 95% done, I did pretty well with fittings, I need to get a couple of reducers.   Everything is ran in spaflex.   That should keep any vibration coming from the pump low.   The pipes that go nowhere right now are for my frag tank when it's moved.  CA Reactor feed and Carbon Reactor.   Gate valves on the supply lines to the tank to control water to the tank.   The one gate valve on the return line is to push water through my external Skimmer.....(currently on backorder).

I'm installing the back braces, and will start filling the tank soon.

Still waiting for my external skimmer to arrive.  Supposedly Coralvue just received their container with a fresh batch of Octopus skimmers, and they are on the way.

I've been working on the stand and Q'tine tanks.    I made a splash guard and dual sock holder.  I'm probably going to raise the socks a little more, getting a little bubbling out the top.

Actually, if I just left the socks out, I get bubbles everywhere, I would fine 2" of foam on the surface of the water, I could just scoop out the foam...........too much work, I'll put in a skimmer.

It was actually millions of micro bubbles......made the display tank look cloudy.

Fixed the sock holder, I raised it a little to keep from getting too much back flow out the top of the filter, I also had to build a bubble trap into it, I was getting the whole sump full of foam.

I have started to pull some things out and put them in Q'tine.  I am Q'ting mainly to keep unwanted algae and aptasia out of the new display.   Although I want to make sure there was nothing nasty that I was unaware of.   Everything had a Peroxide scrub before going into Qtine.  I tried to keep the solution off of the LPS polyps.

A picture of my Quarentine Tanks......2 40 gallon breeders.

I have the rock work the way I want it now, also have my sand in.   Here is a tank shot, if you look closely, I have a school of Green Chromis in the tank.    Next is building the hood and getting lights in the display.

So I've been just starting to learn Solidworks.   DIY learning.  So I figured I would play around with designing a LED fixture.   This has 120 LEDs on the fixture, it is a 60" long heatsink.

I've been debating over 3 individual fixtures, or one big fixture.   The large fixture will be less wires running everywhere, and allow me to space out LED's powered by a single driver.........

Center Braces on the tank are there.  Don't want lights directly over the brace.   I'm going to leave the optics a little broader on those edges, probably 80degree optice.   Probably put 60degress in the centers.

Skimmer installed and running.   Being an external skimmer, it has an anti-overflow feature built into it, but I think I'm going to build a small acrylic pan to fit under the skimmer, so that I can detect water and shutdown the skimmer.

Just a simple power filter.

Consider adding one of those little real-time Ammonia suction stickers. The ones that change colors if ammonia is present. It can be really hard to deal with in Quarantine and creep up on you pretty quick

I was thinking about that....did you have pH problems as well?

No PH issues but I don't really worry about PH all that much unless it goes below 7.80. When running Hypo be sure to only add baking soda as a buffer not baked baking soda. Although a protein skimmer won't work with Hypo you can still run it to help oxygenate the water which would help with PH.

My PB Tang is hanging out in QT in HypoSalinity Water.  1.009.    I was on the road all week (Wife was watching the tank)  Noticed today, that he has stopped scratching his gills.   Good sign.   Now 4 weeks in hypo and 4 weeks in Normal QT.   He is devouring algae sheets, only picking at other food.

After weeks of planning, I have most of the components here for my LED Light Build.   In this build, I decided to go with a single heat sink covering the whole tank.  Also, I am going to screw down the LED's, instead of epoxy.   Well, 280 holes drilled, tapped #4-40.    Not sure that I'd do that again, but it's over.   And only 2 Broken taps.

The main problem with chrome is it does not deal with salt very well. You would need to clear coat it after you have it dipped.

Sounds expensive as well. Would the chrome just flake off over time after exposed to salt spray, etc?

It will start to get rust spots on it,bubble up and flake off. Think back to the old cars with cheap chrome bumpers in ohio. Over time the chrome is gone due to the salt on the roads. Most expensive part of chrome is the prep work. You have to get it to a mirror finish before you can even start the process. the first thing they dip it in is copper, his helps fill little imperfections, then rebuff dip in nickle, rebuff dip in chrome. I haven't chromed anything in a long time but I would guess that heat sink would cost $150-$300 depending on where you go.

I didn't know chrome could rust, I always thought it was the iron underneath it creating ironoxide. A rusty light fixture sure  wouldn't look good.
Title: Re: 180 Gallon Starphire tank Upgrade + Fish Room
Post by: slandis3 on September 13, 2011, 13:16:16
Well the chrome doesn't rust, it corrodes and loses its hold on what ever it is attached to then that gets corrosion under it. You can see on aluminum wheels that are chrome, It flakes off over time. I had a chunk of chrome flake off and cut a brake line on my old suv. :o
Title: Re: 180 Gallon Starphire tank Upgrade + Fish Room
Post by: Boonjob on September 13, 2011, 13:53:54
I personally feel that a quality chrome plated aluminum heat sink would last a very long time with normal care before any corrosion or rust would show...

A good chrome job should never flake... if it is you have adhesion problems during application. Car wheels that flake are because they are made from an alluminum alloy which does not allow a sufficient bond to the chrome as it isn't 100%alluminum. Car bumpers rust from the inside out as previously stated.

For the hassle and cost... you could easily just polish the alluminum heatsinks if that be the look you want.... IMHO.

Well I think all of the metal work is done.   All of the mounting holes are drilled and tapped.   Here is the shell.   The sides are going to have black Acryllic covering it, one to hold the wiring cordgrips and plugs.   Also to direct the airflow down to the fins of the heat sink and out the ends.

Note that the drivers that I'm using are the new Meanwell HLG series drivers.   They are high power (up to 360w)  but unlike some of the other recent high power power supplies, they are still low voltage.   Which means I'll be running parallel circuits protected with fuses.    I have an HLG 185W power supply running 52 LED's.   These are still Dimmable, and have nice metal enclosures, these are also much higher efficiency than most drivers.    93-95%.

Thanks, It looks good in Solidworks.   But it's been definitely a DIY-BVD  (Do It Yourself, But Very Difficult)   I toyed with getting some stuff machine on a Water-Jet, but I still would have had to tap all of the holes, so I did it all at home.

Travel for work has put a real crimp in getting this done, but I took this week off to get some things done.   My Fixture is nearly complete, I need to modify the mounting, tie in the controls, and possibly build a front cover later on.   The different colors on the wires is for each of the power supplies, there are 4 of them, totaling 550w.

With some good light over the tank, tomorrow will be moving day for my clams and some corals that have been in QT for a while now.   Next on the project list is to build the canopy.  (I know, it will cover the fixture)  But I have some jumpers, and I need to fill that hole in my wall.

Here is a shot looking from the end pane.   This was one of the views I was missing in my old setup.  The main reason I set the tank only half way into the wall.

(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi681.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv174%2FWall_Tank%2F180%2520Gallon%2520Starphire%2520Build%2FDSC_1104.jpg&hash=2f9ad411a03dc28fc9687ea0c87092f9cb8b6944)

And an acan that I'm pretty please with how well it has done in the frag tank.  I had this nearly killed......before I realized it just didn't like light.

LED's from Rapid LED and ReefLEDLights
HeatSink from HeatSinkUSA
Metal and Fasteners - McMasterCarr
PowerSupplies - Jameco
Other Electrical Components - DigiKey
Terminal Strips - From a machine we just got done putting in a new control system.
Acrylic - Meyers Plastics

I think that should be about everything.  This build was meant for a nice clean look......trying to keep most of the wires hidden.   There are many ways to do this build cheaper....

Just trying to figure out the best route to take as far as my lighting goes. I have one 175watt 10k halide setup, and will have to buy another complete duplicate halide setup due to a center brace. I was planning on using two 39watt t5 bulbs to supplement the 10k halides, but my ice cap fluorescent ballast crapped out. So at this point I'm just looking for advice on the best way to light my 50gal. (36x18x18). I would like to upgrade to led.

Got the frame of my canopy built.....I'm going to build my doors, but that will come later.   I wanted to get my frame built, so I can attach some panels (Cardboard) to protect from any jumpers.   Which I have.

This is one of my first real wood working projects.   Started with rough lumber.   The canopy probably cost me about $25 in wood.   Of course the tools required to finish the wood are a long term investment.

Yup..I can't believe how strong the joints are.  Takes a little bit of practice with clamping to make sure everything stays flush.    Used a router table with a 36" fence as a jointer.    Would love to have a 6" jointer, but I just don't have the space.    Have a DeWalt735 Portable Planer to finish the boards.

Tank is still going through the brown slime phase.  I'm going to step up the mechanical filter changes....   So no nice pics of the tank today.

But the last few weeks, I've been working on the back walls of the room,  Cabinets, counters, and sink......I removed the old laundry sink, the frag tank will move into that location.   I will need to make custom shelf to hold the RODI water rank. over the back corner of the counter top.   The doors are off of the cabinets getting stained.

Paul you have come a long way. Last time I looked at your post you were just getting the tank. Now it looks amazing.
Quarantine system looks amazing. Very happy to see someone else using hypo and taking the time to do things the right way for the health of the livestock and yourself  :smiley-happy112:

The LED build looks great. One day I hope to be able to replace my MH on my tank with a nice DIY set.  :th_rolleye0012: "Thats a hint to Kattz if he ever moves down here"
Cant wait to see the rest of it come along. Hopefully by next summer you will be about 95% done with it because we all know a real reefer is never 100% ever done  :-ThumbUpsm

Maybe when we come up, I can let you know in advance. I would love to come and see it. You can only see so much in pictures.

Doing alot of cleanup.   I can start to see the floor in the basement.   This weekend, I cleaned up the electric, the outlets were too narrow, since they were originally placed for a 4 ft tank.    I also, separated my circuits, and multiple GFCI's per circuit.    The goal was to make it easy for someone who might be tank sitting to see if a GFCI was tripped, also to separate to keep one bad device from shutting the whole tank down.

(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi681.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv174%2FWall_Tank%2F180%2520Gallon%2520Starphire%2520Build%2FDSC_1129.jpg&hash=847b6c70d7b95aaa9498cbb5e7fc6683c2d949a9)

Also, until I get my doors finished on the stand, a bit too much heat loss. So I did some insulating of the sump.  You may have noticed the red tint on the hoses.  I'm experimenting with LED's for growing Cheato, multiple colors of LEDs.   And with 40deg optics on the LED's I get pretty bright light at only about 15 watts of power.

Nice to meet you yesterday too.   Thanks for the compliment, I just hope that the bacteria stabilizes soon, so I can get some sps to grow in there.

But in the meantime I still have the doors to build for the stand and canopy.

Thanks.

The biggest problem is space.   I could only glue one door at a time, and then re-positioning all of the saws/routers between tasks.   I have the raised panels made for all of the doors.......but the stand doors take alot more space.   Nothing good happens fast with a reef tank!

Well, starting to see that my DSB in my sump is going to be hard to keep clean.    So, I'm going to try the RDSB in a bucket.   Had to buy some black PVC tubing, otherwise its all stuff that I had.   Here it is before I put the lid on to seal it up.

I'm going to build a small stand for it, otherwise the salt bucket is doing a fine job.

Just a bucket of sand.   The goal is to move water across the top of the sand, but hopefully nothing settles on the surface of the sand.   This is only supposed to be the denitrifying portion of my filtration.   Hopefully the 5 gallon bucket has enough surface area.   Also, if it were to become fouled......just unhook the hoses and go clean the sand outside, without risk of contaminating the tank.

Didn't realize that it had been so long since I posted an update.   The last part of 2013 was a rough period with chemistry just not working.  I got it straightened out early this year, and things have been going well for 6 months.   Here is a current FTS

Looks really nice Paul. I like the layout of the rock. Plenty of space for coral growth.

That came from Mantis at Cora.  I'm not sure what he called it, but as it grows, it looks like an acropora sarementosa.   The tips are lavender to red.

Sweet! I have a piece with similar growth that I got from Rich, I hope the tips color up like that.

Quite a few of you know that I've been struggling to get back into things after my system crash. Over the last week, since the frag swap, I've been going through the system getting things cleaned up. I thought I had lost this coral, but during the removal of the dead skeleton, I came across these little guys. This is one of the first corals I ever bought, it is around 12 years old.  I about killed in my early days of reefing.....I brought it back from a single polyp half this size. These are about dime size right now.....and I have two right now.
