Title: Tank_Build
Post by: Todd W. on August 28, 2011, 08:21:09
Well as acquiring donations is a bit more difficult than I anticipated, I am donating my 46g bowfront that I installed the Caflo overflow on.  This overflow will ensure that the classroom doesn't flood in the even of a pump failure or return blockage.  As Cody pointed out, the overflow box can be used to house the heater an possibly other equipment so the sump/fuge has more room.

Here are some pics.  I finished the plumbing last night.  All I need now is some of the clear tubing to go from the PVC to the fuge.  The plumbing is at an angle as the overflow is on the same level as the tank.  It will need some tweaking at setup.

Again, if anyone has a sump/fuge or tank that is max 17wide x 24 long to donate, please let me know ASAP.  I will come get it today as I need to get the tank set as soon as possible.  Most likely I am going to at least drop off the tank on Monday and try to get sand/live rock/water in it on Tuesday or Weds, so if anyone has some circulation pumps and a decent heater let me know.  I can come get them today.

If things don't accelerate, I'll just drain and take over my 37g tall....

Here are some pics of the tank.

the only thing that i worry about is what if some of the kids break anything. Then what, who pays for that?

Not sure, I am open to ideas, anyone that wants to come up with a solution is more than welcome ;)  Most likely since it is donated equipment to a school.... so far we as a group would have to problem solve to repair or replace.

Probably it would be just like a kid breaking any other piece of school property, it would be up to the administration to handle it as this is donated material and will be considered school property.  What would the school do if a kid broke a piece of science equipment, say a $200 microscope?  I image the first step is the teacher performing an evaluation to determine if it was intentional or unintentional and then handling it from there.  Mrs. Mosley has my contact information and I would like to set up a call list in case I am unreachable.

Any volunteers :D

I could probably most likely see them just canning the idea if something breaks with how school budgets are now days. But thats a worse case scenario.

Well they aren't paying for any of this.  The original idea started by the club was:

I was hoping that this person would come forward.... So far pickings have been slim.  Initial interest was good but needs to be energized again...

Just a FYI: we have a member that has graciously donated a 37g tank, sump, canopy and stand for this project if the system plan can use. Not sure if they wish to remain anonymous

@Brian, do you know if this person still wishes to donate?

I believe it was Kenn, Todd. As he stated he was ok with making it known it was him... though I know he is going through some issues with his personal life/family, so you may just wanna shoot him a pm?

Also as stated I am down to help in any way I can, But as far as gear is concerned, I sold it all to someone  ::) so I don't have anything left atm rofl.

What kind of flow are you looking at here?

I think this is just a risk we are all going to have to take... It's not really avoidable, and I'm sure it will happen. My best advice would be; Don't loan out anything you wish to see back again, as it may not come back....

As for donating, Todd is correct it would be up to the school/teacher to repair and or replace the object. And you are also correct Darin I do see it becoming a problem as the school may find the source of funds being more beneficial to something else, and scrapping the whole tank idea at that point.  Though when I was in school I saw plenty things get broken and the principal/teachers always conference with the parents and strongly encouraged them to replace the broken item, they usually got replaced.

How did things go tonight?

I think they went great, todd was working like a mad man, I helped mike plug up some new frags... and hatcher just kinda stood around.

Rodi looked good, was getting lower reading as the night went on from where it sat for so long needed to bleed out the system

And the new frags looked great

Brian, I straightened the boys out when I got there.  Once things were settled down I headed on my way.  If I wouldn't have shown up things would have gotten pretty bad... I will say Todd was the only one I saw working   :hmmmm:, well hatch was holding a hose I think  :th_boredsmiley: .  The set up was awesome and frags looked great!  One of the crabs was already cleaning some algae off of a frag plug (no I'm not referring to any of the boys, this was a real live crab in the tank ;) ).

Things looked awesome!  Good job Todd!

After everyone left Leslie showed up and I went back in with her to tell her what we did.  Sadly one of the Bandais was swimming loop d' loops and twitching while being blown all over the tank  :-\

I went in this morning to put the light back on, the epoxy did the trick, and the Bandai was MIA.  Leslie was sad as they are her favorites so far.  The zoas were already open and the SPS polyps were starting to extend.

This segues into another point, we need some more fishies....

In my defense i will have you know that not only was i holding the hose i was making sure the sink didnt over flow and i helped get the snail out of the hose so HA
Title: Re: Tank_Build
Post by: Boonjob on November 16, 2011, 15:25:36
Not to cast stone here... but you only attempted to get the snail out of the hose... mike freed the snail...  If you wouldn't have sucked him up in the first place it wouldn't have been an issue ;) lol

But you did hold up that hose like a champ, something to be proud of, haha

I'm just kidding anyways, Hatcher did more than I did...

Anyone have a decent 36 inch light?

The fix that we did on the existing light did not work.  Fortunately yesterday I picked up a 24 inch from Adam that I was going to use for the fuge.  It has arms that will strech to 36" so I put it on the tank this morning.

Next visit at the school will be December 7th Weds at 5:30.  We will be installing an ATO, doing a water change, and replacing the heater.

BTW I checked parameters today with my Salifert kits.

Phosphates - 0
Nitrates - 0
PH - 8.1

If you are planning on attending, let me know.

Tank parameters

PH 8.2
Calcium 470
Nitrate 0
Phosphate 0
KH - 8

We installed a new heater, grounding probe, and ATO.  Put in 3 new corals, Oreo Zoa, LA Lakers Zoa, and Purple Death Zoa.

Had to remove 1/2 of the Chaeto as it was as big as a basketball and as firm as a couch cushion.  Donated the Chaeto to Pencilfish for new their new tank.

Mrs Mosley got out the microscope and 3 of her students were in the room and we looked at what may have been a realllllllly small bristle worm (highlight of the evening, too bad we couldn't get pics) and some kind of copopod.

Next time someone please remind me to make a tank coral key/map  :P

Excellent! I love hearing about someone putting things under the scope.

There are really cheap USB lipstick cameras that fit in place of a standard eyepiece.

$80 - http://www.amazon.com/Brand-Still-Photo-Microscope-Camera/dp/B004WAK24I (http://www.amazon.com/Brand-Still-Photo-Microscope-Camera/dp/B004WAK24I)

Park a laptop next to the scope and you can capture all kinds of cool images.

That was a really cheap low end scope from the '70s.  I would imagine just about anything but a 'toy' scope would work just as well.  I would look for one with a light instead of a mirror.

There are some nice dissection scopes with camera for around $200.

They're great for looking at things in your sand.

There are also more traditional 40x-800x scopes for looking at smaller things in that same price range-

I gave away stuff that might have been useful during the time you guys did this, but wasn't a member here at that time I don't think (or at least didn't check here much) :(

Anyway, I might be interested in providing some manual labor (as my technical expertise is limited for reef tanks) on your next build and I'll make sure to keep a lookout for stuff that might be useful for future tank builds.
