Here's what I have laying around:
10 gal tank (20 x 10 x 12)
seaclone 100 protein skimmer
hangon back filter
4 x 48 retro power compact
several old powerheads
several heaters
plenty of egg crate and p.v.c.
So I was thinking: maybe I could set up a frag tank in my basement?
I thought I'd set up the tank so I had two levels of egg crate. The lower about 1-2" off the bottom for mushrooms etc. The second would be about 5 -6" off the bottom closer to the lights and more flow.
I thought I could set egg crate over the top of tank and the lights would be just a couple of inches above that. I had also planned on just using one of the power compact (that is 2 x 48 watt, 1 actinic, 1 10,000k)
Is it possible?
Any suggestions?

Since I know less than most I have no suggestions ; But I would like to be able to follow your Progress because I want to do the same thing. Figure it will help me grow in knowledge.

What kind of corals are you planning for?
I would definitly put at least some LRR in the tank to act as a biological filter.
-
I was looking at starting with mainly mushrooms and then add some zoa's.
I was looking at putting some bio balls or something similar in the hangon filter (after the filter sponge/carbon to act as a biological. I thought with the hangon I would be able to access it much easier.
Let me know what you think.

I have a 10g tank with a 10g sump (has LR, sand, and macro) that acts as my QT/rescue tank. I don't have a skimmer on it, but with a low bioload and frequent water changes, I can keep SPS in it successfully for about 2 months (about how long I QT.)
-
should I put live rock rubble in it or just leave it clean?
-
Clean if a QT, Rubble if an actual tank...you need something for filtration.

Will the 2 p.c. lights be ok? I was wrong they are each 65 watts. So either 130 watts for a ten gallon or 260 watts.

No problem with the PCs, in fact they are great for that kind of thing. One or two? Depends on what you are trying to keep in the QT. One for most softies and LPS and easy to keep SPS. Maybe two for Acroporas.
