Do you test for Magnesium?
« on: November 23, 2011, 14:20:21 »
All this water chemistry has got me worrying.  I do not check my Magnesium, I never have.  However I have also never had SPS in my tank and now I am starting to add a few here and there.

Who tests their Magnesium and how often do you test?  I most likely will grab a Salifert kit as that is the brand that I use.

I do test magnesium, yes. If it's out of whack (look at my scientific terminology, eh?) it can be hard to maintain calcium and alkalinity.

I test magnesium about once a month, more if it was low and I had to dose to bring it up.

I use salifert and test once a month, basically like Ashlar said, if its out of wack, i test it till its steady again, isually every other day to every day till its back to normal and then weekly, then back to normal monthly checks.

With all the tests and such out there, it would be nice to get some probes that do the testing and you can just take a look at it once in a while.

I just add 5 cups of bulk reef supply magnesium every other week and everything is fine. The tank holds water and everything....

I test about every month but it isn't that strick of a schedule. If you do water changes with any frequency it shouldn't be an issue. Every test I've done has said that I'm spot on and I've never added mag just water changes.

With enough money I would just hire my own personal marine biologist.

I am picking up my red sea test kit tonight and will compare it to salifert tomorrow. I will probably test once a month unless I need to start dosing then it will be weekly.

When we were in Alaska and went to one of the Marine Biology centers, this is exactly what they did.  The exhibits were amazing.

We do a total of 40% water changes a month and still have to dose 500-700mL a month.
90g SPS and LPS reef tank, 35g sump, ceramic rock by The Alternative Reef, Neptune Apex w 2 X EB8's, Moonlight module, ATI Sunpower Dimmable 8 X 39W T5's, Octopus Extreme 160 skimmer, PM Kalkwasser Reactor, 2 X Vortech MP40's, Geo 618 Ca reactor

Various thriving montipora, acropora, stylopora, wellsophyllia, blastomussa, hammer, anchor, and frogspawn, lobophyllia, rhizotrychus, pavona, scroll, and pagoda SPS and LPS corals, but no fish because I was too stupid to QT...
