New fish advice
« on: November 03, 2010, 12:55:43 »
Would like to get a tang.
Here are the ones i was possible thinking about
Powder Blue
Sailfin
Hippo
Maybe a Yellow

these are my top choices, but am not against others.

What are your experiences with these? I've read that the powder blue may be the most susceptible to ick than the others.

Would i be able to pick 2 of these? any advice would be appreciated. thanks

I had a powder blue for several years with no problems.  I did make sure to use garlic frequesntly in his feeding.  They can be fairly aggressive.  I had a hippo tang and it became a zoa eating monster!  Ate every zoa I had!  My yellow tang is very passive, however I've heard others can be aggressive.  Not sure what size your tank is, but I've kept a powder blue, yello and hippo in the same tank with no problems.  jmho

I've had 2 powder blues and one powder brown, they all got ick and died.  I now have a kole and sailfin.  They are both passive.  Love my sailfin.

For your size tank I would say yellow would be your best bet.  They do not get big & are not as active or have close to the attitude of a powder blue.  If you find a small powder blue he would be OK but not for more then a few years max.  They are VERY active & need LOTS of swimming space vs the yellow who doesn't swim as fast & isn't as agile.

The blue hep's grow pretty fast but are not as active as the other tangs.  My hep is the ich magnet in my 210g & my powder blue never gets it.... go figure.  My hep picked up ich a week or so ago & then my hawian trigger picked it up.  The hep seems to pick it up at least once a year & is the only one who gets it usually.  He's at least 10yrs old though......

Never owned a sailfin but like others stated they can get really really big so unless you like only having fish for a year or so I wouldn't get one

I would think a kole tang would be great in there & also a yellow, just add the kole first
300g tub o fish

A kole and a yellow sounds  like a good option to me, i think that is what i will go with.
Since you all helped me figure that out, would a coral beauty work well with those two?

I have a powder brown, yellow, and hippo in my tank the powder blue/brown tangs like a large surge of current so you want to make sure you have lots of flow in your tank if you select one of those
If you didn't know I'm kind of a big deal...

I have a coral beauty, she the fish from hell in my tank.  She is very aggressive.   But, I don't think that is the norm for these fish.  They are very pretty fish.   After the other fish stood their ground with her, they all get along now.

A coral beauty should do fine.  I have a coral beauty and flame angel and neither were ever a problem.  I added both angels at the same time several years ago which is prolly why they get along.

That's what my Coral Beauty does.  She goes after every fish I put in there.  I think that's why the Powders got ick and died.  She's such a drama queen ..

I guess the bottom line, fish are sometimes like people...everyone is different and some are even moody!   :sFun_dancing:   of course I wouldn't be talking about myself or anything...   ;)

I agree. I think it's all a 50/50 chance they will all get along.  But, you never know till you try.

Well i went against everything i was thinking and ordered a blue Atlantic tang instead.  Its 2-2.5 inches right know, so its blue with a yellow tail and will turn all blue as an adult.

The Atlantic gets pretty a) large and b) not so pretty as adults according to what I've read.  Your choice, so I'm not going to knock it.  I have a Tomini, and he is beautiful.  Not passive towards the female clown, but pretty much great with everyone else.  I'm going towards either a kole or clown tang to complete my tangs.  Want a sohal, but too aggressive.  I'm going to use my female clown as chum if she goes after my povona coral one more time...

Going with a pair of genicanthus angels; waiting on Rich to find me a pair.  Maybe watanabe, maybe another breed.
