ive had it with dinos!!
« on: November 22, 2019, 12:20:45 »
I have been fighting these things for 8 month now. I cannot get them out of the sand bed.   any tips!!!! I keep nitrates stable at 5-10ppm phosphates are at .04-.07  I have uv sterilizer and I'm monitoring nutrient levels every 3-4 days.  I can stir my sand bed and it will be brown the next day

UV sterilizer did the trick for my strain of Dino’s. All 3 systems are Dino free now.

cant figure these this out.  I let the nutrients bottom out 10 months ago. q the dino bloom.  I have knocked out the strands that were growing on the rock and floating in the column but I cant kill these guys in the sand bed. I'm not noticing  much effect on the corals but wish I could have a white sand bed again. it makes an otherwise pristine reef tank appear dingy! I'm starting to point to the di water or light spectrum.  I'm running my oc at 90 blue and 10 white three of them on a 75  for 10 hours? does this seem  about right with you guys?

Do you have any sand sifter fish or inverts? Might not fix the problem but maybe it would help?

My diamond goby is amazing at keeping my sand clean. My diamond is all over my tank sifting my sand bed.  They are jumpers though.  I also have a few fighting conch that do a good job also.

Homes, I have found that vibrant is great for algae used sparingly. Making sure to keep you nutrients slightly elevated in 10 weeks any problem algae will be dead.  Dino’s cleared up for me when I elevated nutrients/ manual removal/ lower light/ and up sterilizer.    I believe I have a very pesky strand that I can’t get out of the sand bed.   My next step will be a blackout and vibrant.   And then I’ll jump to the nuclear option with Dino x if I can nail down the species Id.   What type of algae are you dealing with?

I really don't know what kind, I am new to reefing so this is going to be a learning process for me.  Much more difficult and scientific than I ever thought.  I do realize that identifying the algae would go along way towards resolving the issue.  I have heard dinos and I heard red slime so not positive which one yet.  Tonight I added a phosphate reducer, cut my lighting way down and I am attempting to dose hydrogen peroxide. Appreciate your input for some possible solutions.

What does keep nutrients elevated mean?  I am not familiar with Up Sterilizer either.  Jjoose did recommend Vibrant to me in the past so I'm going o check that out.

Do you have enough flow around your sand bed? That might be part of the issue

I would try adjusting the pumps see if that helps 3sec on isn't very long maybe try longer time on as slower speed will get a more set current going.

I can't speak for Dino's but I had hair algae and used Vibrant successfully. I'm still in the early stages so I may run into an issue with dino's as time goes on but the Vibrant knocked the hair algae out quickly.
