Brittle Star eat Goby?
« on: October 20, 2011, 14:29:49 »
I have recently lost both of my Shrimp that stayed around my Brittle Star.   My Watchman Goby had his cave in a corner til the Star went over there.  The Watchman went to the other side of the tank. Well, now he is back to his old home, where the Star lives.  Can the Star catch the Watchman?

It can, if you read over my overview on the other thread it most certainly can(doesnt mean it will though)... is it displaying any of those traits?

you started it rofl :)

I have copied the text below, be sure to see the bold text

"What kind of brittlestar is it... Brittlestars in general are considered predators, though most won't actively hunt fish in the tank, and size seems to be a big factor in the fish eating department.  Greenbrittle stars have been documented eating fish, once they archieve a larger size... Most may be clumsy at it, some way more proficient; but either way it's a matter of time....

Most have been reported as eating the fish at night, and they usually display unique behaviors which could warrant concern for it's ability to hunt your fish... They will suspend themselves in a fish's sleeping area waiting for the fish to calm down before dropping down on it... they also will sit perched waiting for a fish to swim under them(best way to describe the way they look here is to imagine them making a vertical cage out of their appendages and holding this position for a long duration, or attempting to trap or grab any fish who swims through the cage)...It is a possibility for a brittlestar to eat a fish, and some unfortunate few have recorded it...  "

I never see him leave his corner.  He comes out at night a little, but doesn't get too far from his overflow and rock pile.  The Goby left because the Star went over there to begin with, why would he go back?  I've had this Goby for about 3-4 years now.  Does he have a death wish ....

The most starts wont actively hunt... so the goby may no longer feel threatened... and there is a very good chance the the star won't eat him...

I've never seen mine go after anything.  Just stays in his corner.   But, don't know what he does after I go to bed ..   And I always drop food back there to keep him well fed.

yeah if he does hunt it will most likely be after hours... I wouldn't sweat it.

yea, can't do much about it anyway.  It's just the only fish that made it from our original 46 bow front tank we started out with.  Hate to lose him.

I had a huge green brittle star and he def was a predator. I have 2 that look very similar to the one you have and they actually seem to prefer algae to meat. I have watched them take pieces of seaweed and hair algae. I never spot feed them and they have grown huge. Very peaceful.

I was thinking about banishing him to the sump, but he's pretty big.  He is a cool critter tho.
