Blood Red Shrimp Molted
« on: February 21, 2012, 16:39:20 »
Looked at my tank when I got home... Pieces of red shrimp parts all over.  I immediately thought someone had shredded my shrimp.  Closer look and it was just a molt.  I have never had a blood red shrimp before let alone see one molt.  The carapace pieces keep the blood red color and are opaque compared to other shrimp molts...

Cool, idn'it?

Even cooler, they'll usually go out in the open to molt, leave the shell there, then hide in the rockwork til their new shell hardens. It acts as a distraction from predators.

Had a jumbo hermit crab do that.  Thought he crawled out of his shell just before he keeled over. Picked up the shell to put it in a nicer spot and he boogalooed right out of my hand.  Thought I saw a ghost....lol.
