Thickest glass anyone has drilled through?
« on: March 10, 2010, 15:35:23 »
I am about to drill through a 125.   I have previously drilled through a 30 gallon, with a diamond edge dremmel tool.  This was thinner glass, and the hole was jaggedy since I was doing it by freehand (with a guide tool that didn't guide), but it worked.   I am actually contemplating a 180 gallon tank, which is thicker than the 125 even.    Just wondering my chances for disaster here based on previous experiences.

From my experience the thicker the glass the better. I was able to successfully drill a 20 gallon long and two 15 gallon tanks. However, I cracked two 10's and one 5 trying to drill them. The tanks you're looking at are much thicker than these so you should be good with either tank you choose.

That makes sense once you think about it.

Thanks for reply.

when u drill a tank you need to take it slow and  keep it wet
SIZE DOES MATTER

A diamond tipped hole saw is a better solution, but in general, the thicker the tank the better.  10gal tanks are a real treat.

When drilling a 10gal tank, I backup the inside with a piece of wood clamped to the glass.  Otherwise it's real easy to put too much pressure.

Yes Wall, I'll be using a diamond tip hole saw.  I had another post about that and forgot to mention it here.  No dremmel for this project.
