DIY Acrylic Sump
« on: June 28, 2010, 09:55:27 »
I am looking to building my sump out of a 75g tank. So I just need to add a few dividers. With an 18" span can someone recommend the thickness of acrylic and what type of acrylic I should ask for at Meijer Plastics?

I used 1/4" and it held good.

Ask for 1/4"  lexan. Don't get plexiglass. Plex is too flimsy.

If your using a glass 75 tank, go with glass dividers, If it was a small tank i would use lexan, but being that big of a tank i wouldnt use anything other than glass, with a quality outfit like youve just built I wouldnt skimp now...

Glass would be nice but I cant cut the teeth to catch macro algae in glass.

Add a lexan "strainer" to the top of the glass baffle  ;D

Does anyone know where I can get a Lexan Strainer? I would like to use glass and that would be good if I could silcone a strainer to make teeth.

with a diamond coated dremel bit you can cut slots in the glass. Its the same as cutting holes in glass.

Lazy bare with me here,,, you know the plastic peice that extends the back of the glass lids on aquariums, you can cut one of those to length, notch all you want and it will slide right over your divider that you want to skim you macro with, you can even silycone it if you want, works great, and if you want to clean it just slide it off...food for thought.

Brian, I'd go with glass baffles also. I use needlepoint plastic mesh to hold my macro in. I'll try to snap a picture tonight.

i would go with glass  and make them a little short and add the stoper at the top
SIZE DOES MATTER
