Hay everybody I am A FW guy Have 6 set up at this time.all lager than 75gal. Doing FW for 30 years. The reason I joined was at the first of the year The wife asked me to set up a SW tank.  Which I knew nothing about. Bought a lot of books and none of them say the same thing. So still no tank yet. Hope you all can help me out. I did buy a 180gal  drilled tank. and that is as far as I have got.  don't know if I wont a FOWLR or a reef Tank

Hey Reddog, glad you found us. FOWLR is a great way to start. You can always convert it to a reef later after adding some good lighting. So what is it going to take to get it up and running? Aside from the tank do you have any other equipment yet?

I have a RO/DI unit 100 gpd, Aquatec RO pump I use This for my Discus fry. A UV Sterilizer Turbo Twist 36w I have these on all my Tanks. I plan on using 2 Fluval FX5 That I have for any Emergency That comes up for my FW tanks. They are new. 2 Fluval E series 300 w heaters. AquaticLife Six LampT-5 Ho fixture 72 inch 432w 10000K lamps. I did order from Foster And Smith A Digital Seawater Refractometer Part# BAK-71911 And a Protein Skimmer Turboflotor 1000 Multi Skimmer Part# BAK-11918. Should be here next week.

UV sterlizer's are really not necessary for marine tanks although they don't hurt anything. You can also forgo the 2 Fluval FX5. Typically for a fish only or reef all the filtration is handled via Live Rock and Sand. The bacteria that grows on and in the rock consumes ammonia and converts it to Nitrates. Typically people have a sump under their tank. It is used to hold all the equipment such as heater and skimmer. Unlike freshwater tanks there is lots of small life forms throughout the system, this life and it's waste will quickly clog a canister filter.

i would never run a canster filter  as a filter  if ur doing a fish only tank just go with a wet dry filter
