I use a mag float to about an inch from the sand.  Use a scraper with a stainless steel blade for that last inch.  started doing it that way after I got a piece of sand stuck in the mag float and put a scratch on the glass.
It costs HOW much?!

I have used the mag float but now use the Tunze magnet (http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/tunze-care-magnet-long.html).  The Tunze works better for me, especially on coralline algae.  The mag float can get sand trapped, but the Tunze doesn't and you can even clean into the sand bed without picking up any sand.  A little pricier than the mag float but worth it in my opinion.

RO/DI water and paper towel only so there is no need to be careful with cleaners.
