verper's new skimmer
« on: January 27, 2008, 19:20:22 »
There have been some inquiries as to whether I bought a new skimmer and if so what kind.  So to answer these questions, I give you this photo:
;D

I'm sorry if the photo doesn't do the skimmer justice.  I'm using Tim's tried and true method of coralline retardation on the skimmer body.  It works pretty good!

LOL  Not quite that big.  Its about the same height as my ASM G4x was although its a little wider. ;)  Reeflo 250.  5 gallon bucket is sitting to the right of it.  Its still breaking in as most other owners say it takes 2+ weeks to get it to full efficiency.  Massive micro bubbles.

It was kind of iffy on whether I would end up with the Reeflo or not.  As it is, I didn't get the model I was originally looking at but, Thanks Viggen.

No problem. They work well on calcium reactors too (IE, paper coralline retardation blockers/shields/covers etc).

I have to say that I'm very happy with this skimmer.  After giving it time to break in and then cleaning it, it has been very consistant pulling out dark skimmate.  No overflow problems which can be a concern with an external skimmer. It may be an illusion but the water seemed clearer within a few days of installing it.  I know that the ASM G4x always pulled out a lot of skimmate, but it was more a light to medium greenish color.  The Reeflo is pulling skimmate more of a iced tea to coffee color.  I can also tell it is doing a better job because my tank glass doesn't get buildup on it as fast.  The fish love it also because I have been feeding them more.

The amount of organic extraction being pulled from your skimmer is no illusion. Your corals and fish are probably wondering what took you so long to upgrade to a monster skimmer. Glad to hear the new skimmer is exceeding your expectations.
