Author Topic: My 300 gallon starphire SPS tank w/125 gallon macro/mangrove refugium (Read 26462 times)

After months of waiting without a tank, my new 300 gallon custom three sided starphire glass aquarium built by Marineland (Perfecto) has finally arrived. Special thanks goes out to Verper(Scott), jjoos99 (Jeff), rmstevensiii (Mitch), UDJustin (Justin), JustCoral (Scott Wilson), Matt, Brian and Ari for helping me move the new aquarium into our basement.

With a "high flow" theme in mind, the substrate for my new aquarium will be a mixture of Tonga reef sand (Tropic Eden) and coral fragments (GEN-X).

Flow will be powered by four Vortech pumps with three battery backup units. I recently added two new Vortech pumps to go along with my two existing Vortech pumps.

With any new build, lots of reef salt will be needed!

At least one of the volunteers requested that I would not post pictures of the move on the Internet, sorry. My new 3 foot wide, 300 gallon aquarium was very difficult to move into the basement (especially the first time around). For the past year or so, I ran both Tunze 6100 stream pumps with Vortech pumps on my 210 gallon aquarium (which now belongs to Viggen). However, after a year of using Vortech pumps, I developed a new preference and sold my existing Tunze pumps to Logzor on Cincyreef.

I like the flow patterns better on the Vortech pumps and I like to keep as much electricity outside the reef as possible. The wires on Vortech pumps remain outside the aquarium which is a plus for me. I am not a big fan of the new Tunze Stream design. I preferred the older version Tunze pumps with the large magnets. Both pumps can be controlled and you can adjust a Tunze pump in multiple directions whereas the Vortech pump will produce random flow in one direction only. You can't go wrong with either pump.

It is nice to be back, Brian. All my corals and fish still reside in a temporary 300 gallon Rubbermaid tub for about another two weeks. I should be able to provide some nice top down pictures of the corals soon before I move them into the new aquarium.

The Perfecto engineer and the two tank builders who built my new aquarium removed the existing tank from my basement, one glass panel at a time. The first tank had some silicone gap issues, but Perfecto immediately agreed to fix the problem. They were very helpful and friendly. One of the tank builders requested the contact information from the carpenter who built my custom, solid oak stand and canopy. He really like the new stand.

The vortech pumps will be placed near the top sides of the aquarium (two pumps on each side).

Thanks for the compliment, Lazylivin! l plan to use much of the same equipment for the new aquarium as I used on my last aquarium, which includes access to five Lumenarc III reflectors, 400 watt Icecap ballasts, a large GEO calcium reactor and a large Euroreef RC 500 skimmer. Right now, everything is still hooked up to the Rubbermaid tub until I finish painting the background on my new tank and do the plumbing. The electrical work was completed months ago by a licensed electrician.

The stand and canopy is a custom order from John Thorman in Rhome, Texas. It is 100% solid oak. I had to assemble the stand and canopy in my basement otherwise it would not fit through my basement door. I also had to sand, stain and finish the stand and canopy myself. The stand is 38" tall by 3 feet wide and the canopy is 21" tall by 3 feet wide.

I used paint rollers this time. I just finished my third coat last night. The stain is red mahogany by Minwax. I used Helmsman's spar urethane to finish the stand and canopy.

I wish I had approval to finish the basement. I have to wait a few more years according to the boss. The framing in the background is for the electrical system for the reef and refugium.

The tub is actually on loan until my new aquarium is up and running. I am not a big fan of tub life but it makes it very easy to take top down and underwater pictures.

With your corals all mounted I can see why it will take so long to build your rock work back up. It is alot easier to mount a coral onto a tank already aquascaped then it would be to place a whole rock into place and make it all look good and function with each piece of coral that is on it. I am sure that it will look great when you are done though!!

I have a question regarding rock. How come you don't have much Coraline algae. I see is on your snails a bit but not rock. Do you have an urchin that eats it or does it have something to do with type of rock?

I set up the tub in mid November when we moved to a new house. I use 400 watt metal halide ballasts only with 14 k IceCap lamps. The more intense light you provide, the less coraline algae will exist. The corals will demand most of the calcium in my system. Only in the dark areas of the tub will coraline algae thrive.

Okay, Coraline cant survive in high light. That makes sense. I have seen a lot of SPS dominant systems and TOTM that don't have Coraline either and always wondered.

Is that also why your coral color is so intense?

Consider it done. There a ton of local vendors and other folks in the 'Salt-City' club that have some really nice tanks dominated by SPS. Most of these people get exclusively ORA products.

After being without power for over four days because of Hurricane Ike, I upgraded my emergency back up system. I will be running three of the four vortech pumps on battery backup units and I also purchased a small, very quiet gas generator for long-term power failures.

I spent the entire weekend working on the plumbing for the new system. I used a total of 11 unions and 2 ball valves. My skimmer and calcium reactor will be located directly behind the 125 gallon macro/mangrove sump so the unions were installed to allow access to equipment for scheduled system maintenance.

I haven't asked, but are you going to use sand on the bottom or bare bottom? with that skimmer and the flow your vortech's creates you have an ideal set-up for it. You could also by an Aquacontroller 3 with the Aquasurf addition and turn those Vortech's into wave making machines working together.

I dont know if you've played with the AC3, but it's a bad mother...the aquasurf option makes it sick too now that some one came out with the Vortech option.

One last thing, how much space does the skimmer take up with the three pumps?

I think I am going to modify one of the overflows before testing for leaks. One overflow drain slopes several inches, then goes horizontal, then slopes again into the sump. I think I am going to modify the other overflow to allow it to slope another inch or so (to help prevent back pressure). Ideally, if I had the extra space, I would want a uniform slope of at least 1/4" per foot toward into the sump.

Per EcoTech Marine, "The EcoTech Wirelessly communicating Wave Driver will allow your MP40w pump to wirelessly broadcast to other MP40w pumps." Will you be running an AC3 with your Tunzes, Travis? The aquasurf option sounds really nice!

Thinking about it...I have the options picked out that I want, but I just have to decide to spend the money. My thing is that I want my parameters to remain constant and I to be able to monitor stuff without having to own a share in Salifert. If I do the AC3, then I am going to rig it out.

On a serious note, there is no debate when it comes to running an oversized Deltec skimmer on your new reef aquarium. You will obtain fantastic results with or without direct feeding your skimmer.

Not much to update at this time. I am in the process of making a lot of new saltwater. I hope to start moving the live rock and corals from the Rubbermaid tub to the new tank this weekend.

The main system is skimmerless, but it is connected to a 125 gallon macro algae sump. The skimmer is still hooked up the the 300 gallon Rubbermaid tub until the end of the week.

If my skimmer's collection cup did not look like this every week I would seriously consider trying a different method to feed my skimmer. I am still skimmerless on my new display tank though. The live rock display on my new tank required over 40 sticks of Aquamend epoxy and super glue gel to keep the rock structure and corals attached. I had to make numerous trips to the Home Depot. I could not find Aquamend in stock in the Dayton area but purchased every stick Home Depot had in stock from the Northern Cincinnati locations (Liberty Township, Tylersville and Forest Park).

FYI- if you add alot of epoxy to your system at the same time, it will make your skimmer go crazy (overflow) ...hence the reason why I am still skimmerless on the new system

The Rubbermaid tub is finally empty and out of my basement! I will post updated pictures of the new tank in a few weeks or so. The new system has been up and running for the past 24 hours. No leaks! My next project is to paint the calcium reactor and skimmer stands and mount all the equipment (pump drivers, ballasts, battery backup units, etc.)

I do not use filter socks on the returns since that will be the place for the skimmer's feed pump but I will use one filter sock on the skimmer's return pipe. The new rock layout is amazing in my opinion. I went through over 40 sticks of Aquamend on this new project. The layout was modeled after a patch reef.

I filled my tank one five gallon bucket at a time from already cycled reef water from another holding tank and from freshly made saltwater. I mix the new saltwater in a tub first and then add it to my tank after checking for salinity, etc. I use RO/DI water and Rubbermaid trash cans w/ Red Sea Coral Pro salt mix to make new saltwater.

You could use a clear rubber hose (available at most hardware stores by the foot) and a return pump to fill your tank but I prefer the excersice you get by doing the water changes with five gallon buckets. I would not recommend using a garden hose to fill a reef tank.

From what I have heard from people who have seen it and will remain namelss the tank looks really good. So yes positive. Although for people that don't know it might seem like you are hiding something that might not be so positive. They were getting pic after pic then you finish and nothing.

Update- I am almost finished with the rock work on the new reef aquarium. The new tank has been operational for almost 2 weeks. The existing SPS corals should start to color up again within the next few weeks. When you move SPS from one system to another, it takes time for things to return to normal (emphasis added).

Right now, I have 8 new SPS coral frags in QT. I QT all new sps frags in a separate 30 gallon breeder aquarium to check for red bugs, AEFWs and monti eating nudis. I attached a few pictures of my SPS QT system below. I will have a large shipment of limited edition SPS frags arrive over the weekend from the DC area as well.

My camera is in the shop for repairs so I can't share updated pictures at this time, but I am in the process of adding a nice school of blue/green chromis I received from Marine Solutions. Some of the fish have been in QT for about three weeks but I recently added more so I will keep them all in QT for another three weeks or so. My SPS corals look great (very colorful assortment of mostly Limited Edition Acropora and Montipora corals). I decided to take a break on fragging corals for a while so they can really grow out. I recently switched to Ushio 14k 400 watt metal halide bulbs after previously running Hamilton, then Ice Cap 14k bulbs. I really like the Ushio bulbs, and they came highly recommended by Copps who is good friends with Sanjay Joshi. Sanjay told Copps that not only are Ushio similar to the Giessman, but they are probably made at the same factory... but of course much cheaper.

I recently upgraded to a new 5 stage RO/DI unit from BFS as well. I have never been able to maintain zero TDS with my old water purification system and am very pleased with the new unit so far. I can provide updated pictures of the reef when I get my camera back.

The 150 is a very neglected eel tank right now... Not sure what direction I'm going to take with it just yet. I've considered a sting ray, but I doubt I do anything until after summer.

I had a pistol shrimp for years....I would rarely see the shrimp, but would hear the clicking sound the pistol shrimp makes (sounds like a mantis shrimp). The cleaner shrimp should be out in the open. My cleaner shrimp are very active during the day. However, I added a group of Peppermint shrimp from Aquatic Specialists which only come out at night (for the most part). The peppermint shrimp are very nice additions to my reef tank. Thanks for the update. I always enjoyed seeing pictures of your 125 g reef. I recall the stand and canopy was custom made as well. Sure hope your goby is fine. I have a clown goby that spends most of the time hiding in corals.

In the past my cleaner shrimp have been out in the open and active as well. I added one and it was gone over night. I thought my banded shrimp got it. I moved the banded shrimp to the fuge and a while latter I added 2 more. One was gone over night again! The other has been hidding out in the caps in the middle of the tank. Tonight with a flashlight, I see he is moving around the tank. I'm not sure what's up. I could see the pistol hidding out and I think I hear some clicking now, but the goby is no where to be seen and he was plenty large enough to easily see... My diamond goby is always out and about though. I may go to Aquatic Specialist tomorrow and get another cleaner shrimp or some peppermints. I'm also noticing some HA starting. I guess I need to work on that.

You are correct my Dad and a buddy of his custom made the stand and canopy. I need to get some updated pictures or a video.

Sometimes you take two steps back before going forward. I recently switched to a new 72 x 27 x 36, three sided starphire tank with just one center overflow. The new system is the same size as my old system, which was approx. 425 gallons (300 gallon display with 125g refugium).

With the new tank and different design, I decided to go with a more natural, open look reef theme. I used a lot less rock this time around to allow more room for the corals to grow and fish to swim. Less rock also helps with my overall high flow design powered by four Ecotech Marine Vortech pumps as well. Any feedback is welcome. My new reef has been up and running for almost a month. Most of the SPS corals are starting to pop again with color.

I spent several weeks working with the engineer to get the center overflow just the way I wanted it. The entire overflow box is less than 6 inches wide and takes up very little space inside my tank. I considered going with an external overflow, but figured it would be more difficult to move the new tank to the basement with an external overflow attached.

Full tank shot of my reef at 2 months old [8/4/09]. All corals in my reef started out as small frags (most are still small). No actinic lighting, just 14k halide bulbs. The rock work in this system is limited by design to allow lots of room for the corals to grow out in all directions.

Ray, I understand your stick fix. My reef is 100% SPS. Addicted to the colored sticks. Whenever you are ready, those orange tip and blueberry like frags can be in your reef as well.

I would like to make that happen tomorrow but money wont allow it. Still trying to catch up from the week that Vivian spent in hospital. But maybe next month
