Diy kalk reactor.
« on: April 03, 2009, 11:28:10 »
Ok i am going to help dstyles put together a diy kalk reactor during Easter weekend. Were going to use pvc as the body and a maxi jet for a pump. If any one else wants to go in and make one let me know. I am going today to get prices on all the stuff needed to make them. Just let me know.It will look something like this but a maxi jet instead of a mag drive, unless you want to use a mag drive or similar pump.

ok the top off will consist of a float switch, relay, extension cord,12v power supply. The extension cord can be bought for about $5. the 12v power supply should be about $10. But you may have one laying around the house somewhere. So if i go buy everything i would say about $35. I am going to go and get the final prices on the kalk reactor tomorrow. I will have a price on the cord then as well. Maybe even find the power supply while im there. So i am going to order the float switches tomorrow so i will need to know who all wants in tonight if possible.

yep. that's how i run mine. I have a can of water with the pump that my ato controls in it. When it kicks on it feeds the kalk reactor.

OK, Hope you guys dont mind if I jump in. I'm a newbe @ this and have been seeking info on dosing and even tho I've not started yet I,m sure I will to and need knowledge. I know someone who just mixes kalkwasser and adds it but I believe A doser would be the way 2 go. Is a kalk reactor the same as a doser? And is it (kalk) the first thing that I will be adding? I dont think Ill need to dose for a while.
Sincerely, Ray

No this is not a doser. This when used with an auto top off, will allow you to add small amounts of kalk water to your tank as the water evaporates. I have been using this method for about 2 years now. I dont dose anything and that works well for me. This is very simple to use and setup. On a side note, anyone that wants an auto top off. i need to know how long of a bracket to make. I need to know what the measurment is from the top of your sump to the top of the water lever in your sump. This way i can make custom brackets for eveyone.

ok well thanks to scott i found a place where i might be able to get some of the stuff cheaper even with shipping cost. So as of right now i have 5 people wanting the ato so for the relay, float switch, and 12v power pack it would be 23.28 than all that is needed is a extension cord which i will have the price on that tomorrow. Aslo i need to know if anyone has height limits. That way i know how tall to to make the reactors. If we get enough people wanting ato's we can save shipping as well.

as of right now i have

dstyles         ato-kalk reactor
jeremyt         ato
jeblin            ato-kalk reactor
rayviv           ato - kalk reactor
udflyer00       ato

If we dont we may have to wait untill next weekend to build them. This will save about $6 a unit. Anyone thats would like to see how i have mine setup is more than welcome to come out and take a look

ok the total price of the ato is $23.59

the reactor to make one 2' tall with the cap and bottom $11.85.  now this price does not include the parts to hook up the mixing pump. That will depend on what pump you want to use for example. If you use a mag drive style pump. the total price would be $17.35. if you use something like a maxi jet 1200 it would be $17.41. These prices will depend on what size in and out our pump has. I need to know by Friday who wants one and what pump you are wanting to use. I figure Ill make them all 2' tall to make it easy for everyone unless you need one smaller. The only thing i forgot to include was the price of pvc glue. So add $1.00 to the final price to cover the glue We'll use on these.

I assume you just have the powerhead on the relay to turn on and stir while you are toping off with another topoff pump?

I am using a little 500 gph pump for topoff, is there any reason I couldnt just use that pump in the bottom inlet and use it to stir without the need for the extra pump?

No  the relay is used just for the top off. The float switch drops and turns on the pump to add water to the tank or reactor. I have my reactor pump set to come on twice a day to stir the kalk.I use a timer to have it come on an noon and midnight. If your up in my area you are more than welcome to come out and see how i have mine set up

ok now the kalk reactors are done. I just need to know what size tapped hole to put n the lid. So if your going to use a aqua lifter to feed it with i will tap it for a 1/4" pipe tap. If your going to use a power head/pump i will tap it for 1/2" npt please let me know this week if possible

Just picked up my ATO & reactor last nite at  Slandis3s' house and wanted to comment on it.

The ato & reactor, are by definition, simple. (because I can understand them). But the Quality looks to be top of the line.

While there I got to look at his set-up. Which was very impressive! And then he showed me the polished alum. fixtures he did. I sure wish I could have gotten in on that deal. WOW

As I stood there and looked at all this I began to realize the potential of this mans creativity. I dont even think he realizes it. His tank display shows it and the stand shows it and the language of this man even shows. I was truly impressed and count it a privilege to have been there.

So having said all that I want to thank you Mike for taking the time to help me understand and for sharing your time with me.

Sincerely Appreciated,  Raymond Norton

I love the custom canner door cutouts and vent.  Must be nice to have access to the waterjet.  :)

I got to see Slandis's tank a couple months back and every aspect of it was awesome. Very well planned out with attention to all the details.

ITS ALIVE, ITS ALIVE!!!  Finally got the maxijet and all the fitting set up. So the reactor is officially online.

I have dripped Kalk before and played around with 2 part, but I'm lazy, so this will be the first time I seriously attempt to keep good alk and cal levels.  I have always had slow but steady growth, but we'll see what happends now

Thanks again for the labor and setting these up Mike.  Although I had been wanting to do it for awhile, again I'm lazy

Thanks

havent gotten around to posting in a while.

this kalk reactor is a monster  ;D   it hasnt even been hooked up yet but it still is a boost to me ego to see it stand next to my tank.
when lonnie pulled it out of his truck my jaw about hit the pavement. i was at work so i had to explain that it was for calcium and not for other things that use tubular piping and hoses. one person even said "its so big"

-grins-

great job slandis
