Temps for Corals

I have read a few things, but don't want to taint the results by making any suggestions.  Let me know what you think.

Really depends on the coral and the location it is from.

I agree.  I'm looking for some ballpark estimates, and not canon, end-all be-all ultimatums.  In this case, for a softy/zoa dominant tank.

I like the 79 deg mark and so far it would seem other do as well, i chose it b/c after my research it seemed to fall into the best range for me, while giving the best tolerance, should something go wrong with the temp.

It looks like the consensus of repsondents so far is 79 degrees.  In a book I have, it says, "the marine reef aquarium should be maintained close to 75 degrees F and never allowed to exceed 80 degrees F.

Later in the same book, in discussion of oxygen saturation, it says, "The simplest way to maintain (rather than measure) a high oxygen concentration is with low temperatures (not higher than 76 degrees F) and strong turbulence.

we keep our temps at 82. We do this for a few reasons. It helps keep the corals metabolism high for faster growth, a coral can more readily acclimate from a warmer temp to a cooler temp than from a cooler to a higher so when you take corals home from us if you are running cooler temps they will acclimate nicely were as if we ran temps to the cooler range and some one took a coral home to a warmer tank it is more likely to stress.Especially sps corals going into warmer halide tanks. And finally 2 of our 3 main suppliers say the oceans temps run about 82.

the biggest thing is to keep it the same temp and not let it rise to much or go down to much

Mine's been steady at 79 since I set it up...  Just thought I would get some input since a couple coral frags are looking less than stellar.  I'm just being impatient though.  I know they take some time to acclimate to their new surrounding.  So now it's off to ensure that nothing else is a problem :)

My tanks run around 81-82. 78,79 are buffer zones to make you feel better.

Average ocean temp is 81 degrees where our corals come from...but I try to shoot for 78 degrees.  The temperature inside a coral is few degrees warmer than the surrounding water temperature...and I have halides...so I have a bit more room for error.

I am running mine about 80 ( not by choice, its what the tank wants to do  ) and I have been very happy with my zoa's growth.
