Getting it going
« on: June 11, 2010, 15:04:49 »
After being out of state working the past year I have not been able to be as active on this board and more importantly my aquarium. I just got a 120 from a good friend of mine and I have been retro fitting everything to make my old stand accommodate this new tank. But 6 days later 400 dollar leaving my bank account, it is up and cycling. My goal for this tank is Tile fish. I have 2 purple already and two yellow on the way. I also plan on attempting flashing tile fish. (and coral of course) I say my wife will most likely want some nemo's, as she likes to watch them play in my anemone. I'll get some pics up as soon as I get some LED lighting. I'm leaning to the ecorays but was wondering if any members or sponsor had in suggestion

Let the fun begin !

got a question though ... you say that your tank is cycling. I presume that the fish you have mentioned are in another tank maybe ???

I did notice you mentioned a old stand so I am thinking another tank but just thought I would ask the dumb question  ;D

No question is dumb lol. No my fish and coral are sitting down at gerber's while this tank cycles through. My old tank was a 72 bow front and I made a square stand for it for shelving..........here comes the pics you guys pressured me into it.

So hope I do this right....

pics of the tank and stand

Standing back it looks normal I know, but here are the sneaky little mods I had to do just to make this HUGE thing fit

Added support to insure 120gals did end up on the floor

WHAT The the crap is that???? the other side support rail, with this difference. Had to cut a whole so the overflow and return would work.

I wanted a filter sock but my wife said new sump or new led lights pick one.......so I made my old bio-ball system into a filter sock system lol.

here is some of the bad. The guy I got this tank off of broke or lost the glass tops. So I went to Lowes to get 2 made.

Dont know if you can tell but they both are an 1/8 to big so they dont fit. Guess I'll be going back tomorrow to get them fixed......I thought reading a tape was simple.

And the worst news!

Dont look like I will be adding this any time soon.

Thanks for the interest.
Brian

How are you cycling the tank ?

or a better question would prob be ... whats your Ammonia source ?

I let it do everything naturally.. This will be my 4th setup I have done for myself. I have found it better to buy my live rock and sand and add fresh water for 1 day and let the water oxygenate before adding my salt. The fresh water will add kill off and help the cycling process. I have found in the past doing it this way will decrease the chance of a rough spike when you thought everything was A Okay!

sounds like the Ammonia source is the die off from the live rock

Well my first set up I lost 500$ in fish. I got bad advise from jacks along with strips that was 3yrs old. After that I began to read on the net what was needed to get a tank going. Jacks said this chimical that chimical. So I found out the things needed to cycle a tank. And I read about cureing live rock and thought what about useing the curing cycle to cycle the tank? So I tried it. Took readings everyday and waited to see the nitrate spike and leave. After that I checked for a few more days with perfect permeters. So I just kept doing it like that. I guess nature knows more about chimisty then we do

so you add rock, sand, and Fresh Water for a day???  this would kill off any beneficial bacteria that would SPEED up the cycling process.
