Calculating overflow pipe size
« on: July 16, 2010, 01:25:52 »
The chart below and recommendations within this thread from other Ohio Reef members are intended to assist with planing pipe size for reasonably quiet gravity feed overflow to sump. Please know that the chart measurements are based on a combination of internet research and my own calculation. It is not recommended to make your decision solely on this information. Feel free to post feedback if you think numbers are on high/low side based on your personal experience and if you have any web site links with reference tables or calculators as comparison. Would also be neat to post up estimated GPH running through your overflow and whether it is quiet or noisy and if you think it could handle more flow or is already pushing its maximum for your comfort.

   Pipe       ID   OD            GPH
   1/2"      .50-.60"      .85"         153   -   240
   3/4"      .75-.85"      1.06"         240   -   377
   1"      1.00-1.03"      1.33"         349   -   549
   1.25"      1.25-1.36"      1.67"         545   -   857
   1.5"      1.50-1.60"      1.90"         764   -   1200
   2"      1.95-2.05"      2.38"         1200   -   1886
   2.5"      2.35-2.45"      2.89"         1745   -   2743
   3"      2.90-3.05"      3.50"         3055   -   4800
   4"      3.85-3.95"      4.50"         5236   -   8229
