glass baffels
« on: December 22, 2008, 13:54:20 »
I called a glass company today and asked for a quote on these:

19 1/4 " tall x 17 1/8 wide  (x 2) 1/4" glass

14" tall x 17 1/8" wide (x 2) 1/4" glass

they quoted me 50 bucks... is this about right.

also they asked if I wanted the edges finished?  I have no idea what that means... do I want the edges finished?

Sounds about right to me. Edges finished basically means they knock the sharp off, sort of round them a little. I didn't when I built my own sump cause it cost more and I was just going t silicone them anyway.

thinner glass will not work.  the sump is a 125 gallon tank that will have alot of water in it.. the thinner glass will not hold up

You'd be amazed what thinner glass would do. If anything double up and the glass. The taller ones go thick and the shorter go thinner.  Do some reasearch on it, I bet you'd be amazed.

If there will be equal amounts of water on each side of the baffles, there wont be any pressure on them at all. Not sure of your sump design but keep this in mind. Some could be thicker than others. Might save some $. Like for instance... bubble traps usually consist of three baffles. Depending on the layout, they could possibly have the same amount of water on each side of all three peices.

Just my $.02

Don't forget about the flow.  I use a 125 also.  I used plastic and am amazed at how much bend there is in the down stream side.  I had to double the sheets on the last baffle.  The silicone didn't hold the first time.  There was just to much flex.   I would go thinner at the front and use something ticker at the end.

Yeah I used plastic from Home Depot.  I put it together with silicon.  Make sure it's 100% silicon.  I will try and get you some pics.
