Title: So, I think I want a clam
Post by: Kenn on January 24, 2016, 16:40:34
So, I think I want a clam.

I have always been leery about putting clams into my tanks.  I've heard all the horror stories about difficulty to keep as well as spawning in tanks etc.

So I decided to ask you all to please share your experiences both good and bad about clams that you have kept in your tanks.

Also please give me your opinions on species preferences as well as why you prefer them.

I plan on getting the smallest clam I can find.  I like small things    :be happy:

I look forward to seeing your replies.  Thanks so much!

Derasa clams are easy, they typically do not attach and work great in the sand.....
Crocea clams need to attach to rock, and were easy too, until I tried to move them and injured the foot.......downhill fast.

But they all will suck the Ca/alk out of your water.   What do you have for lighting, they can adapt to alot of lighting, but obviously the more the marrier.

What's small, I have a 7 or 8" Derasa that I can part with.  :o

Exactly Jeff lol

I am more than willing to switch out with a smaller one when the first gets to big.

Thanks for the offer! I may take you up on that.
To answer your question, I will have it under 2 LED fixtures I picked up from Marine Solutions a while back. I have both a shallow water shelf as well as a brightly lit sand area that it could be placed in.

I keep the Ca / alk at around 418ppm / 8-9ish :)

I have a small system so I test for those weekly and use additives A and B when needed on a regular basis.

Derasa get big...but I started at 3" and hes been growing for 3+ years.   Maxima clams are also popular, they have a longer shape.  But they all get big

LEDs are fine.

Thanks so much for the suggestion Steve!

After doing a quick search this definitely goes on top of my list for research. Although they do seem to be the most expensive I've run across so far  :o
