Brine Shrimp Direct Hatchery Dish
« on: July 15, 2012, 22:58:14 »
Anyone pick up one of these shrimp disks or ever used one?

http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/c9/Hatchery-Dish-p183.

Wondering if it really produces and if it's worth the extra $$ over the other 2 litre hatchery kit?

Nah I stuck with my roots and went the DIY route... After much ponder and getting some good reviews, I went with this.... Cost less than $8 w/ the pump.... I can run 2 if needed off this pump and it seems to be working like a champ.

are you using a air stone with it ? and does the inverted bottle also have the bottom removed ?

No airstone, and yes you will need 2- 2 litres... You will cut the top off one, and the bottom off the other... The one you cut the top off will be your base or stand as you can see... the one you cut the bottom off will be your hatching chamber...  Cutting the bottom off allows you to easily fill it and add your eggs... if you drill the hole in the cap small enough you wont even need to seal your airline going in as it will self seal.

I poked holes in the bottom that I have cut off and inverted it as a lid for the hatchery to keep out anything that may find it's way in... You can see it inverted in the pic.

It works like a champ... I just put it by the window with the airpump, nothing else no heat or light(aside from the window) in 14hrs I had over 90% hatched I would say. Hardly any unhatched eggs. Ambeient temp was 74F

My mandarin was gobbling them up 5 or so at a time... so much she was choking(or what appeared to be choking) at times. My fire fish was zooming around the tank getting his fill aswell..

I used about a 1/4 teaspoon of eggs, and I filled a 20ml syringe for the nano, and the rest of the hatchlings about 1 litre I put in a container to try my hand at gut loading them into adults. ( also got great advice on this aswell) We shall see how they go...

NP Kenn, though I can't take any credit, Brian was the one who I got 90% of the info from. I had saw the DIY hatchery but wasn't sure how successful it'd be as it seemed simple rofl... Brian gave some great pointers.

Thanks Brian ;) I was throughly impressed... Now to try my hand at growing them aswell as pods.

Where did you pick up your brine shrimp eggs? Local or order ?

They are from Brine Shrimp Direct. Jacks has some locally, but they are $7 for a small vial and much cheaper at Brine Shrimp Direct($30 for a pound, which is literally 50 of the vials you'd get from jacks and a pound has to be a lifetime worth of eggs I would assume lol)...

If you want some from Brine Shrimp I am sure we can throw an order together... I know I want some things and Brian mentioned he wanted some stuff. should help cut down on shipping.

I read that there is 250,000 eggs in a gram approx. most vials I saw were 10 grams. 1 lb=454grams that's 113 million eggs ;) or 102 million hatched shrimp as they most all boast 90% hatch rates.

This looks interesting. Are you guys feeding these as newly hatched baby brine? Can the shrimp be gut loaded with phyto?

I picked one of these up on the group buy.....talk about freaking easy.   Started hatching in 12 hours......

Picture with the top on.....this is sitting on a 5 gallon bucket.

In the center is a opening with a strainer/basket.

Picture with the top off.   Eggs place on the outside of the ring.....as they hatch, the shells sink, and the live nauplii swim to the light coming in the center.   Lift out the basket, rinse and feed.

That's it.  No air pump, no extra light....   Probably a little smaller hatch size than you would get from a 2 liter.   But this was plenty for a treat.

Do you have to do something with it daily?  How does the process work in the long term?  Finding this interesting!

If you hatch brine shrimp, you need to feed them as soon as they hatch......before they consume their egg sack, otherwise there is no nutritional value.   The other option would be to raise brine shrimp and feed them phyto-plankton.   Then feed them after their guts are filled with good nutrition.   The later takes a bit more equipment.

As far as the tray.
Fill with a brine water solution (3 teaspoons of salt in water)
Add Eggs
Cover
Wait for them to hatch.
When they hatch, pull the basket in the center, rinse the shrimp in fresh water, then feed
Clean the dish with fresh water

Baby brine shrimp aren't really necessary for adult fish.......but it's a treat.

Very Cool!  So you wouldn't have to do this daily, just when you wanted to give them a treat?

Yes.   Live brine shrimp can help finicky eaters sometimes.   Not a bad tool to keep in your arsenal.

I had one of those on my Pre-order but had to scratch it due to lack of funds. And my mandarin disappeared.
