Skimmer Modding
« on: August 19, 2009, 11:26:42 »
Anyone tired the fishing line mod on skimmer impellers?

I've got a cheaper skimmer now and I have heard that this works pretty well.

What kinda line did you use? How did you tie it? How are the results?

What skimmer do you have?

Anything that will break up the bubbles more is what you want. I took a steak knife to my old Sea Clones impeller. I didn't cut the blades, just roughed up the edges, and made a big difference. Much finer bubbles.

I've got a CSS model 65  :-X. Mine works pretty well really, but It could be better.

Full Disclosure: I didn't pay anywhere near full price for it.

JeremyT, Lazy: Do either of you have any extra? I'd like to try it but don't want to buy a whole reel of it.

The fishing line or mesh (or both :) ) help break up the air that is drawn into the pump. The smaller the bubbles, the larger their surface area (collectively) and the better the skimmer works. This mod has doubled my skimmate in the last few weeks, I'm very happy.

Thanks; I guess I need to fix my skimmer and get it ready for use. I know very little about them at present.

i just modded my DNW200 with a single Sicce and couldnt be happier. I found a used Sicce for $25 plus a couple frags and the it only draws 21 watts and looks like solid white inside the chamber. Easy swap and a hell a lot better then the stock pump

PM me with email address and i will show you how i did it. I dont know how to post pics.
