wave maker?
« on: June 11, 2011, 10:49:29 »
anyone have any experiences or comments on this...?

I think I really want to put my koralia on a wave maker, but i refuse to buy the hydor wavemaker, for the price of it and 2 koralia I could have just bought an ecotech....

Does it really work to minimize detritus build ups over standard pumps?

HAR HAR HAR... I believe you need to go sit over there with pete...   lol

I was looking for more of an answer like yes it works well, it's easy to get a wave going and makes a difference over my previous flow and is worth the 50 bucks or no it sucks I can't get a wave at all with it or it quits working after x amount of hours... sigh some people's kids these days.

I have the duo currently and used to use it in with 2 hydor 750s, didnt create much of a wave did have alternating current which worked ok.  I replaced both 750s with 1 1400 and liked it better while I still kept it on the wavemaker and it worked fine, really clean sand bed with no detritus ever.

Curious...

What is the smallest tank anyone has used a wavemaker on?

10 gal.  Any sized tank with coral will benefit from random flow.

Is there anything wrong with using decent timers to act as a wave maker? How often should the heads switch? I've noticed people setting theirs anywhere from 15 minutes to 4 hours.

Hey Paul Wall, were you going to say something else? You have any suggestions as far as timing frequency and duration?

Was going to, then just got tired.

Some try to simulate an ocean wave, so every 4-7 seconds.  Which is much too frequent for an on/off powerhead.  I would probably opt for a tidal based switching.

I think the longest interval for the duo is like 2 min with it being as short as 15 sec I think.

The problem I've had with timers are my K2's start backwards more often than they do forwards.  My K4's haven't given my as much trouble, but I haven't had them off too often yet.
