Dosing container
« on: June 03, 2013, 01:13:20 »
Looking for 3 tall dosing containers. Not wide. Like a 6" acrylic tube. Preferably at least 3 gallons. Needs to be clear. Everything I find is really expensive or to large of a base. Any ideas where I might be able to find something like this for under 10$ each

If you ever get to Lima, the plastic place up there may have something. If I get there I can check for you. I need to go up and pick up barrels. I think the place is called U. S. plastics

Yes if you wouldn't mind checking next time you head there. Thanks

Just doing the math for you.   If the tube was 6" ID, it would need to be 24.5" tall to hold 3 gallons.   At 5.5", you would need to be 30" tall.

8" Acrylic (7.5"ID) is probably the best Cost Ratio.  You would need to be about 15.5" tall.  If you could get a 4 foot piece of tubing, it would cut down nicely into 3 x 3gal tubes.....

But your are not going to hit the $10 price point.

Unless there is heavily discounted scrap it sounds unlikely to be a option. I may be forces to use those large clear/blue water containers.

What will you be storing in them? I tried using those type containers for limewater only to learn limewater eats through them! Had to do with the type of plastic they were made from.

Lazy Meijer has 3 gallon water bottles for like $10 a piece. I use one for ATO water on my 72.

I have my 2 part in cheap flimsy plastic containers with no problem. Not sure how it could hurt it? Other than getting to warm during mixing.

I haven't tried putting anything other than RO/DI water in it.

Are you going to be able to get your float switch installed in that container?

I thought rodi water was one of the most corrosive substances known to man? I'm sure I read an article about that recently.

Talked to a Chemihead friend last night and he launched into this longwinded explaination of WHY this happens, sent me this clip:
----------------------------------------------------

Care must be exercised when using DI water. The very lack of ions also makes this coolant unusually corrosive. Called the "universal solvent," DI water is one of the most aggressive solvents known. In fact, to a varying degree, it will dissolve everything to which it is exposed. Therefore, all materials in the cooling loop must be corrosion-resistant.

Copper and many other common materials are not compatible with DI water and will contaminate it. When you design a system using DI water, be sure to specify DI-compatible materials such as stainless steel or nickel.

__________________________________________________ ____________

Stored as pure DI it will try to absorb any and everything it can, his suggestion was to add 1/4 tsp of IO per 5gal or whatever salt I intend to make up out of this water to keep it from being so radical. Be sure to do all TDS checking before adding salt mix.
I added salt to my vat this morning and VIOLA it stopped shocking me

I talked with my father about this, who works in an enviroment where DI water is heavily used, he said it will agressively sap impurities from PVC up to certain Stainless steels.

Corrosive is just too broad of a word.  But water wants to have stuff in solution with it.   HDPE containers do fine with 0 TDS water......

I dont think it is a broad term, I think most people just think of an acid type in connection with this word... Any water can and does corrode.

The ones I used were small 1/2 gallon. These look like the same kind of plastic. Check the bottom and see if they are HDPE. If they are you should be good.
