Which Pump?
« on: October 02, 2007, 15:31:59 »
I'm thinking I'm going to have to replace my return pump in the not too distant future. I think the impellor is going bad again. I just replaced it a little over 6 months ago. Rather than replacing it again I'm seriously thinking of getting a better pump.

I currently have a Rio 12HF and overall I've been pretty satisfied with it other than it suddenly going through impellors. Does anyone know which MagDrive would be fairly equivalent, flow wise, to my current pump?

Gary, maybe the store that salty went to would have the pump you want at a good price?

I can't get down there right now.

I think a Mag 9.5 would be too much for my system.

That's kinda what I was thinking, a Mag 7.

The Rio 12HF has been a really good pump, but for some reason the magnet on the impellor starts to swell and then it begins to bind up. The first impellor lasted a couple years, but the replacement I bought about 6 months ago is already beginning to swell.

I've been doing some research and looks like my Rio does 630gph at 4', the Mag 7 does 475gph at 4', and a Quiet One 300 does 600gph at 4'.

It looks like the Quiet One is closest to what I currently have. Are Quiet One pumps reputable?

Looks like the Quiet One is more efficient than the MD also.

Quiet One's are good...for the price difference, go with and Ehiem.

You could run a mag 9 ($89) at 4 ft is 800gph...put a ball valve and reduce it down the flow a little.  I throttled back my 7 a hair because it was to much wide open for my overflow.

FWIW... I replaced my Via Aqua 2600 with a Quiet One 4000 and I've been very happy with it so far.  It is an extremely quiet pump.  I chose the Quiet One b/c, on-paper, it was more efficient than the other pumps with similar flow and the price is right!  If the rated flow is higher than you want, you could also tee the return line and add additional flow in a diff area of your aquarium.

Via Aqua 2600 (46 watts) return pump - $39.99
Rated flow: 740 gph (@ 4' = 349 gph)

Quiet One 4000 (50 watts) return pump - $55.99
Rated flow: 1017 gph (@ 4' = about 780 gph)

Just my .02,

Eheim are the best, they will last 20 years +

Rio's last 20 months

MAG pumps are inefficient & noisy.  I have tried their mag 7 & it was to loud, went back to a external pump to eliminate the noise.  Put a MAG 36 on my pond & I can hear it 10 feet away :(

Spend the money.... get a eheim :)
300g tub o fish

I've read a couple different places that the Mag Drives are loud. My line is already teed off with the tee going to my refuge. I have a valve on the refuge leg to control the flow. I'll take a look at the Eheims.

I ran a mag 9 on a 90g and a mag 7 on a 75g. It depends on how much head is involved...if just a few feet w/ no 90 degree turns, etc, then a mag 7 would work well. otherwise,  you may want to try a mag 9. i did run a mag 12 on a 90g as well.....Would not go with anything larger on a 75g than a mag 9 (mag 7 may be your best fit). Very durable pumps. Ehiem pumps are nice, but cost more.

My mag pumps were never loud. I am using a Mag 7 to feed my skimmer now and it is very quiet. The larger mag pumps may be louder, but for what you need, I don't think noise will be an issue at all.

My current set up is on a Mega-Flow tank. How much flow can they handle? My current return is a straight line from the pump to the bulkhead with a tee in the middle for the refuge.

I am pretty sure each mega overflow is designed to handle 600gph flow.
Mag pump flow rates are measured at zero feet for max output. So if you placed a mag 9 in your sump for return flow, you would be looking at about 800gph (maybe a little more) of return flow to your reef. I think the All-glass mega overflows can handle much more flow than is listed but you could always use a ball valve to restrict flow, if needed.  You would not need to restrict flow at all with a mag 7.

Mag 9 specs:

115 Volt 60 Hz
93 Watts - 1.33 amps
14 Feet Shut Off
3/4 in/out threaded
950gph at zero feet
800gph at 4 feet
200gph at 12 feet

Mag 7 Specs:

115 Volt 60 Hz
70 Watts - 1.6 amps
12.5 Feet Shut Off
1/2 in/out threaded
700gph at zero feet
475gph at 4 feet
25gph at 12 feet

Well, looks like a Mag 9.5 would be the way to go, especially since I'm diverting some of it to my refuge.

Yep.. looks like a good choice to me.  I do not have my Quiet One tee'd off, and my overflow box with a single 1" U-tube keeps up with no issues, so I don't think you will have any issues there.

I popped over to RC and used their head loss calculator. According to it the Mag7 would be less than what I'd like to have and that's before considering the tee off.

Now I just need a good place to pick up a Mag 9.5 without breaking the bank!

Thanks. This really cool guy made it for me and then just took off and abandoned us all. Last I'd heard he had moved to some dump in Pennsylvania.
