My Reef Pics-Tank #2
« on: June 11, 2006, 23:00:07 »
Here are pics from my second reef tank, started about 3 months ago. Total water volume for this system is about 100 gallons (75 gallon reef w/ 40 gallon sump). Enjoy the pics!

I have more pics of the powder blue.....it's the 10 k lights, not the fish that is pale  (i.e., I prefer the crisp white look which does not do the fish or corals justice unless you see them in person). My battery died today on my camera, but I can post some more pics of the Powder Blue tomorrow under actinic light. I will post another tonight as well.

Aquavista, when I ran 10K's on my tank and took pics the fish didn't seem a bright as they were in person either.  I use PC actinic lighting to suppliment and the coral color looks awesome when just the actinic is on.

As for the powder blue, the pics I posted, in my opinion, are priceless. The fish is a very demanding tang to keep in captivity and mine is very healthy and hardy (emphasis added).  The powder blue body will always look somewhat pale under 10 k lamps, because powder blue is a light color. However, notice how bright the yellow shows up on this fish under 10 k lamps! As for your fish not looking pale, do you have a powder blue as well, and if so, can you post a picture?

can the PB even get the nori with all those rubberbands

The current is too strong in the system, and without the rubberbands, the seaweed will be washed away.

nope i don't have a pb. i cannot keep hard to keep fish alive. here are some pics of my fish though.

I took this pic of an achilles tang in the wild from Hawaii. The picture is not the best, but it does illustrate an important point: tangs, whether they are yellow, powder blue or achilles, will always have brighter colors in the wild. In my opinion, your achilles tang looks pale under your lights as well. jmo.

Your tanks look great Aquavista! I was wondering why you had the seaweed tied down so tight but I figured it was a flow thing, but still looks like the tang is getting what he wants!  ;D

I examined my powder blue very closely last night and I really think my pics I took yesterday had a lot to do with making the fish appear somewhat pale under very intense, 10 k lights and with my camera flash going off so close. When I observed the fish again last night, she had  a very dark,  black face and mouth area, and the main body of the fish showed a soft blue color, which is normal for powder blues.  Ironically, the picture displayed in the Marine Depot catalog for Powder Blue tangs looks almost identical in shape and color, to the same pics I posted yesterday of my pb, go figure!

Have you encountered any compatibility issues with placing your achilles tang in the same aquarium with a chocolate/mimic tang? I also have a mimic tang, but was unsure whether these two acanthurus tangs could be housed together in the same system without fighting, etc.

Yes, the tunze streams make it hard to use algae clips in smaller systems. Thanks for the compliment!!!

I kinda like the look of it being tied down.  Minus the bands, it is more natural looking.

one solution may be the clear plastic string the kids use to make bead necklaces.  my kids have some that i \have used in the tank for various things.  i am sure that against a dark backround like nori it would be nearly invisible.

My long term concern with feeding my tang from a rock is what to do when I upgrade aquariums. The next home will be a 210 gallon aquarium, which will be to deep to feed the fish from a rock at the bottom.

My powder blue is really spoiled. She will only eat seaweed from the rock. She was in quarantine for over two months and would not eat from a seaweed clip. She is not picky when it comes to frozen foods (i.e., she loves formula one soaked in selcon) but pb's need lots of the green stuff daily to stay happy & healthy.

It looks like we will be moving her to a much larger home within the year. She is really to big for my 75 gallon frag tank.

I lucked out with my PB tang. She will eat anything from anywhere.  I have even held food in my hands both nori and frozen and she will eat from my hand!  :)  I got her on April 26, 2005.  Added her right to the tank and she has done great ever since. :)

My powder blue arrived with ich.....treated her  with hyposalinity  at about 1.009/1.010 ppm  for two months in a 29 gallon QT. I had to do water changes every two days as well....just makes you appreciate the fish even more.

My 240 isn't hard for me to reach down into but when I had my 110 gallon in Texas we had to use a step ladder just to reach halfway down into the tank! lol only thing I could think of was to put the rock closer to the top of your scape and just replace the nori when needed! although I do see the problems with that, could get knocked off, fish might not like placement, and a few other problems. I'll have to keep thinking for ya or I'm sure someone may think of something better!  ;)

what if you put the seaweed rock somewhere towards the top on athe rock structure?  maybe work it into the layout.  I don't have tangs, so I really am not familiar with "rules" or anything, but thought I would give the idea anyway.

Why clip it, I just drop it in and let the fish eat it. Mine destroy a sheet in under 5 minutes.

Depends on the fish. I only have one fish in this system and when the seaweed floats or moves around the tank, it goes to waste (i.e., the tang won't touch it). My tang will eat three sheets a day (about the size of a credit card) if the seaweed is attached to a rock. Otherwise, it goes to waste and pollutes the water.

I can see how your approach would work as well if I had other fish in the system to train my powder blue how to accept the food by alternative means. But since my fish was removed from the ocean about 5 or 6 months ago, it only knows what it was exposed to in the wild ....feeding non stop on algae off the rocks.

Hopefully, in time, I can train the fish to accept seaweed by other methods. It sure would make my life easier.

true they do pick all day in the wild, my problem is nothing last more then a few minutes. I have never had a problem even when the fish were young, I always just dropped it in and just let them go to town

My YT will not eat algae if it's floating either and he/she/it's been with me for years.  Guess I've been trained to put it in the clip for him.  :)

I have a PB, yellow large hippo and small hippo.  All of them will eat it no matter where it's at or what it's on.  Even if they get it out of the clip and it's floating they go for it.  I guess I just have piggies...

ASHAME THAT NOBODY GETS TO SEE MY POST ANY MORE MICKI THOSE WERE SOME GOOD POST SPEAKING THE TRUTH.

I STILL THINK THAT YOUR PB ISNT ALL THAT GREAT LOOKING AND THAT THERE IS NO WAY YOU KEPT THAT PB IN HYPOSALINE WATER OF 1.009 FOR 2 WEEKS THE FISH WOULD OF DROWNED OR MOST LIKELY SEEING HOW ITS A PB IT WOULD OF STRESSED TO MUCH AND WOULD OF DIED THAT WAY. AND YOU CANT SIT HERE AND SAY THAT GREG DOESNT KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF FISH  CUZ HE HAS A SYSTEM THAT YOU COULD ONLY DREAM TO HAVE YOU'LL NEVER HAVE THE ABILITY TO SUCCEDE LIKE HE HAS BUT LIKE I SAID BEFORE YOUR A LAWYER AND COULDNT TELL THE TRUTH IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT SO WHATEVER

My powder blue spent 2 months in a quarantine tank using hyposalinity. It took me a week  to reduce the specific gravity to 1.009/1.010 ppm from 1.026ppm. It also took me another week to increase the specific gravity back to 1.026, and hence, the fish was exposed to 1.009 to 1.010 specific gravity for about 6 weeks, which is the standard procedure. I took my time decreasing and increasing salinity levels to avoid stressing out the fish.

Instant ocean use to (and may still) have a monthy flyer with little stories about thier product and people who use it. There was a neat story about a Anularis angel that was kept for 10+ years at a zoo or public aquarium that was in a really low S.G. It was lower than the 1.009 that your tang was in.

Never knew that- good to know.  Thanks Charlie.

I do know that there are a lot of saltwater fish that live in brackish (salt/fresh mix) water around the coastlines that do quite well.  That might explain why they willingly go into that kind of environment.

I recently removed my powder blue from my 75 gallon SPS frag tank to a larger home. In hindsight, I would not recommend placing a fish like this in anything smaller than a 6 foot long aquarium (IE, needs plenty of swimming room). Here is an updated picture of the powder blue in her new home.
