anenome in trouble... maybe...
« on: August 24, 2006, 18:38:28 »
ok.   hope everyone on here has been doin great.  I got a new teaching job and have been busy setting up my classroom.  I got my rbta about 4 months ago and it was doing great, as you can see in my avatar.  now the right side of the anemone is still doing great but the left side looks shriveled and its tentacles aren't extended.   It still eats silversides and mysis shrimp that I give it using the tentacles from its right side.  It sets in a hole in a rock at the bottom of my tank.  my nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia is all at 0.    I'm wondering if a snail or something got in the hole with it and possibly died causing major ammonia build up on the left side.  I know when I've been vacuuming flatworms I've accidentally got it caught in the siphon but didn't really think I damaged it too much.  Is there any suggestions out there about how to handle this.  I'll try to get some pics but my camera doesn't have any batteries at the moment.  I'm concerned cuz its so beautiful when its healthy and I don't want it to perish.  thanks for any help!!!!

post a picture.  It will help.  It may be injured or splitting.

ok... here goes.  its gonna get photo heavy now!   as you can see the left side of my anenome is shriveled into the hole in the rock I put it in.  it never moved from that hole in the rock ever since I put it in there.   heres what the anenemo used to look like...

here are some pics of what the bta is now.... this is why I'm concerned.

what do you all think????  the hole in the rock is somewhat deep... thats why I wondered if a astrea or a serith snail may had crawled in there and died by the foot of the anenome.

I'm no expert on them, but I do know they move alot when they don't like their current location.  I would think it would move it something was annoying it.  It does look like something is going on with it. Are you feeding it?

I think it looks fine.  It looks like that part might just be going or staying in the rock a little more. Anemone's are notorious for changing their shape and appearance from time to time.

WOW, what a big difference from when you first set the tank up until now!  Very very nice!!!  You should be proud!!!     :)

Thanks for posting the pics!

When I first started with anemone's I fed them all the time. Since then I have stopped feeding them. I think it almost does better when I don't feed it.

i would think if it was damaged or hurt the entire thing would shrivel up.  It might be preparing to move or split

Mine goes through stages of this all the time.  I think it's just part of the cycle.

well that makes me feel better but my gosh it used to be incredible...   I'm just wanting to make sure that all is well and how best to handle this.  I got some new clowns but they aren't hosting or eating very well yet.  I'm hoping they'll move to it.  it seemed happier when I had clowns hosting it.

oh... probably 3 to 4 weeks.   its wierd.  the clowns that I've had.... they stop eating and get real skinny and weak.... then they disappear.  I tried treating one of them with maracyn 2 but was unsuccessful.  I think its some kind of bacterial intestinal thing. I don' t know.  None of the other fish show any signs of this....  I don't know why its just the clown fish.

I really like the clowns I had and was all excited when they began hosting in the anenome...  but they bit the dust and we'll try some more.  if this doesn't work out, I may have to go with a skunk or tomato... although I heard tomatos were very aggressive.

that is a possibility.... But I haven't seen these new clowns anywhere close to it.  so perhaps the anenome is sad because its being ignored?  ::)

ok...  well the one thing I feel is a good thing in all this is that one whole side of the anenome looks fine which tells me its at least halfway healthy enough to still eat and should come out of it.  I'm just paranoid I guess...

one quick question on your clowns...are you getting tank raised or wild caught ones?? if they're not tank-raised...I'd suggest getting those...they're much hardier and less prone to diseases!  ;D

oh...forgot to mention..even if they're tank-raised clowns...they will still host for you! I've got my cinnamon....tank-raised and he hosts to his little patch of algae in the front of the tank..cuz they look like tentacles from an anemone and he hides in it all day!

Are the clowns getting pale look to their skin? Might be brookynella. I lost my first 2 pairs to brook.

I don't feed my GBTA other than squirting some cyclopeeze it's way now and then and mine is getting big.
