Title: New Member in Huber Heights
Post by: lazylivin on October 06, 2008, 22:56:53
Hello fellow reefers, I joined through Dodd today at North Dixie Reef. I have been a member of Reef Central for the last year, never knowing that we had an active club in Western Ohio. So this was a good find. I am excited to find and talk with others in the area that are obsessed with sinking a bunch of money in a rectangular cube full of water.

About me- I have been into fish tanks all my life. As a kid like most started with the neglected fresh water tank and probably killed more gold fish, guppy's and beta's than I care to share.

When I bought my first house I put a freshwater tank in the wall between my kitchen and family room. It was a lot of fun and my twin boys loved it because it was just at their height.

As I got older, and a bit wiser, graduated to the Saltwater FO tank. Somewhat successful, made a few mistakes ,but generally a good experience.

Then we moved again, the tank went in storage until I could get all the new house remoldeling my wife wanted done. So I was a good little boy and did all the items on the honey do list, knowing my turn to spend a little money was coming. Ohh the way my mind works.... :)

So finally I got the blessing to build a reef tank, something I always wanted to do. Unfortunately, the new house layout did not give any opportunities for an in-wall. So I built a stand and canopy for a 90 Gallon Saltwater, added 4 - 96w Power Compacts and Some Dry Fiji Rock with a Wet Dry Bio ball.

Same Tank after it cycled and a few months went by added some fish and coral from Garf

(https://ohioreef.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi486.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr227%2Flazylivin%2F8-21-2005010.jpg&hash=8b2203ec4aa4bfd23b230cf1141eaf7263ecdce7)

A few years went by and I had a mishap with the 90 gallon. I won’t get into that now, but I will say, tidal wave through the living room, down the hall, into the kitchen and down the basement steps.

So that was an opportunity to redo things a bit, never problems, just opportunities.. Right….. Yah, My wife didn’t think so. So I did down size to the now current 55 gallon but also put in some safety features with equipment and did some nice aquascaping with the rock. The current configuration is Live Rock with a sump, Aqua C remora protein skimmer and 2 250w MH 20k. All the LPS I had in the 90 gallon came over fine to the 55. However, this time around I wanted a mostly SPS tank. So I will start trimming back the LPS as the SPS grow in. I have been buying my frags from TheAquaDen. Gary has some really nice stuff. Always healthy and great color. Here are some pics of my tank now…….So that’s my story, hope you enjoyed it.

Your tanks look great!

When you had that tank in the wall, what type of material was the wall made of? It has a nice finish to it.

Thanks UD Flyer....The wall was done in green board (moisture resistant drywall) and then the trim around the tank was a piece of cove molding.
