What goby to choose
« on: July 24, 2009, 20:50:14 »
Anyone got any suggestions as to what species of Goby I might want to pair to a pistol shrimp?

The Watchman Goby is the one that seems to be the most popular from what I've been reading.

Keep in mind that it will be going into a 26g tank

Thanks

The Yasha Hase Goby is a great one to choose. They pair up very nicely. I currently have a pair of yasha hase and a pair of tiger pistols that all stay together. Really cool. They are a little on the exspensive side in comparison to the watchman, but are soooo much cooler. I would be willing to let this quadro go for a descent price if your intreseted. I also have single yasha hase also.

It depends on what type of pistol shrimp you have.  There are some preferences in the fish/shrimp combo (similar to clownfish and anemones.)

Hi-fin gobies are neat...and fairly inexpensive.  Wheeleri and diagonal gobies are an even less expensive choice.

I have blue and pink spot gobies, orange spot prawn gobies and one yasha gobie. One of the orange spots are living with two large tiger pistol shrimps.

I do have a concern with jumping since I don't use a lid. From what I have been reading this may be a issue with some species.

It can be an issue...especially before they acclimate to their environment.  Once they have a burrow, it's unlikely since they'll spend most of their time protecting it.  It also depends on what sort of other fish you have...whether they'll scare the gobies or not.

That's a very good point. I could use a cover until it settles down. as for my present fish, I have a Gold Stripe Maroon Clown (1.5") and a very small Royal Gramma. Kinda funny to watch...they seem to be the best of buddies. They even hang out under the same rock  :).

Don't get a yellow clown goby.  They're cute if you like small fish but I found out the hard way that they sometimes eat acros.

Clown gobies will eat Acroporas to make a nest (although if you have large enough colonies it's not an issue.)  They also will eat sexy shrimp and other small shrimp.

Catalina gobies are a huge no-no for most reef tanks.  They are a cooler-water fish...a normal reef-tank temperature will slowly kill them.  I think like 75 degrees is the absolute hottest they can deal with...and that's not ideal.  I think 60's is supposed to be good for them.

Thanks everyone, for all your input and suggestions !

Today we made the big decision and purchased this fantastic little guy...

We kept it simple and went with the yellow  :)
Now.... to get the banded pistol shrimp  ;D

Thank you. Although I must admit, I thought the same, but my wife has wanted the yellow all along. So I gave in and we went to the LFS to have a look to see if they still had any. He looked healthy and all but he looked a little drab to me.

After we got him home and under better lighting I changed my mind. Granted, I only have PC lighting, but his colors really jumped up a few notches in my book. He went from drab almost a greenish yellow to a bright yellow and you could really see the blue spots.

So,all in all, very pleased with our new little friend.
