Sub Forums for Reef Discussion
« on: November 07, 2009, 08:14:07 »
As most of you know I have suggested the addition of sub forums to the Reef Discussion Forum. in order to get a clearer view of what the club 'as a whole' wants I have posted this poll. Poll ends 11/14/2009.

Do you want people to have more than 1 vote?

The board members will discuss this at our board meeting.  There will be an entire look at the forum, not just adding a few sub-forums.

This poll is only intended to get an idea of what people would like to see added to the forum.

Yup, that's cool.  Just wanted to let you know we're addressing this.

I fixed the poll for you and moved the thread to Site Q&A.

Ooops :o
It's o.k. though. These additions are going to be discussed at one of the member meetings. The higher ups will make the decisions I suppose. I'll try to get it added.

So is the idea from this point forward, or is there going to be some huge feat to organize all the reef discussion threads under the new sub boards?

We will have to wait and see what the Board of directors wants to do with it. I would say move the active threads to the new sub categories, and then again it may be easier to just start out from the here and now.

It would be VERY time consuming to try and go through all the existing threads and move them to the appropriate sub-category.

Just so you all can see. We had votes in every category for forum expansion. It don't take a rocket scientist or an engineer to figure out that this would be good for the club  now does it.

I agree with Andy, this can only help keep things organized. I'll even volunteer to retroactively sort the threads of the past year!

Ohio Reef board will address this with the new year, along with other issues.

Like i said previously, there wont be a decision on this until the new year, but since the author of this thread is very concerned about this issue, i am looking into it while on vacation.

I have looked thru the latest 250+ posts in reef discussion and tried to reclassify them into subforums. I came up with about 30 subforums. The number 1 subforum by number of posts in reef discussion would be Equipment. We already have an equipment forum...so apparently we are not utilizing our subforums appropriately.

The next runner up was inverts, then fish, then things like chemstry, algae, product reviews (now a subforum), etc.
The subforums with the least number of current posts were sps, lps, large tanks, natural reefs, and propagation.

See the problem? There is an infinite number of subforums. how do we pick which ones to use...and where do the rest of the posts go? Why should we have subforums if we already have one, but it isnt being used as much?
on a cell phone...need to write part 2.

Not trying to poke holes in an idea, but with an issue like this, we cant just use what the majority wants. Why should we have the subforums suggested if they wont be used? I am open to suggestions. Sorry to the author that a solution has not been found as quickly as you would like, but we have to look at the bigger picture.

I apologize for all typos. I am on a cell phone trying to type this post.
