Gary (Viggen's shark tank pics)
« on: May 07, 2007, 11:45:21 »
I posted the pictures below for Gary (Viggen). Includes the 1200g shark tank and freshwater tanks pictures as well. Not sure, but it looks like a pair of Berlin skimmers are being used for the 1200g shark tank, wow! The shark looks like a little beast.

Thanks for posting the pics for me!!

Yea, unfortunately they are only the berlin skimmers however they are the XL version with Needlewheel upgrade.  They are total POS & I had nothing to do with selling the equipment otherwise a ER would of been under there.  I probably spent 2 hrs trying to get those dam things running properly & they still suck!

The reason for those skimmers is because the guy was trying to get his FIRST aquarium at or under budget.  Plus, my friend uses those on smaller tanks & figured they would be fine.  I told him many times that you need to use something better on tanks like this, one of these days I will convert them.  He does not feel skimmers are needed & I do agree to a point.

Just my 2 cents.......but  if I had a large fish (IE, a shark) that eats a lot and pollutes the aquarium, I would want as big as skimmer as possible to make sure the water is as clean as possible.

true, but you could also simply do h20 changes which on this tank involved adding salt to 2 125gallon drums, turning a gate valves to drain the tank then turning another gate valve to pull h20 from the tubs.

Many feel more frequent h20 changes is better then a big skimmer.

I would do both (heavy skimming and very frequent, LARGE water changes) for a shark tank. Do you have any updated pictures to share of the above shark, Gary?  Looks like a black tip reef shark from the above picture....not sure if the shark will remain still to get a better photograph?

yea, my friend that setup the system & sold it to the guy has never been a skimmer fan thus he uses the 2 Berlins on the huge tank.  I believe the owner does 120+ gal a week

No updated pics & when/if I am able to go back I will definitely take a few.  It is a black tip reef shark

The guy still tells my friend that he wants us to build him a 20ft x 20ft tank for the shark & a few others that he wants.  Hopefully that will happen.... be a incredible experience to install something like that

OK, so

20ft x 20 ft x 4 ft = 12,000 gallons

20 x 20 x 6 = 18,000 gallons

he wanted 8+ feet tall but that would probably be to expensive.
