My new fish

After taking pictures of schools of Yellow Hawaiian Tangs from a snorkel & dive trip on the Big Island, I finally purchased one today from Aquariums Etc.

Very nice, you better fatten him up though!  He is skinny!!!  Get some sushi at Wal-Mart and let him graze on that all day every day for a while.  That will fatten him up!

Yes, my new yellow tang is skinny but I had about six to select from. All the tangs were healthy and ate formula two frozen food while I was at the shop.

My only concern is whether I can mix the yellow tang with a mimic tang when I upgrade to a 180g. Although my mimic will turn chocolate as it matures, both fish are yellow which may cause some compatibility problems. Right now, each tang is placed in separate aquariums.

I'm sure you can fatten him up in no time.  :)

Does anyone know whether yellow tangs are compatible with acanthurus tangs? I have a mimic tang as well and would love to mix them in the same reef if possible.

I attached another picture below of wild convict tangs (acanthurus triostegus) grazing in close proximity to yellow tangs (zebrasoma flavescens) in Hawaii. Convict tangs are similar in shape and size to mimic tangs (acanthurus pyroferus). But in captivity, I read something about how yellow tangs can become quite territorial and aggressive towards other tangs???

My yellow tang loves Formula 2 pellet and the "Sushi Party" toasted seaweed from Wal Mart.

Tim, I have a yellow tang. It was the first added "tang" in my tank.  I have since added a powder blue and two hippo tangs. The yellow is by FAR the most doscile tang I own.

Thanks for the advice, Micki! Hippo tangs seem to be better tankmates than most other tangs as well. I have seen other people successfully mix powder blues with hippos, as well as mixing them with mimic tangs and powder browns.

I have both a hippo and a YT. They get along really well, it's fun to watch them "play" together.
