October Topic of the Month
« on: October 23, 2009, 21:46:05 »
In order to stimulate more discussion, let's try a "topic of the month"

This month's topic is...

How do you quarantine/check for pests...and why?

Why?  How successful is that?  What have you found?  (just asking to stimulate discussion...not trying to start arguments or something!)  :)

I dip my new corals in tropic marin. This helps remove some of the pest on my new frag. I know its not the best to use but I don't have the space or money for a quarantine tank to use interceptor on them.

Is this specific to corals only or are fish procedures included?

My procedure for new corals is:

1.  Remove the base of the coral...this helps fight nuisance algae and Montipora Eating Nudibranch eggs
2.  Dip for 15 minutes in a treatment solution of Lugol's...most hitch-hikers will come off at this point...and I can see what I'm up against
3.  Dip for 30 minutes in a treatment solution of Flatworm Exit...combats flatworms and adult nudibranchs
4.  Superglue over all remaining areas of exposed dead skeleton on the coral...so only the living tissue isn't covered - also fights against algae
5.  Re-attach coral to a new plug
6.  Place in my 10g QT tank for at least a month.
7.  Check weekly for nuisance algae or other pests
8.  After a month with no signs of pests, the coral will be moved into the 55g...repeating steps 1-5.
9.  The coral will sit in the 55g grow-out tank for a month.  This is like a 2nd stage QT...but isn't a true QT tank.
10.  After a month, steps 1-4 will be repeated again.  This time, the corals will go into my 150g.  There should be no problems with nuisance algae or pests.

I keep most treatments on hand just in case though.

If I did all of that I don't think I would ever buy anything new for my tank!  LOL

I use Revive coral cleaner and Seachem Coral dip. Generally dip everything just to be sure.
