Wood strength
« on: December 16, 2013, 17:04:34 »
I am working on building my stand for my 57.  Tank is 36x18x20.  I plan on building the stand a little bigger.  My question comes to this.  The top part of the stand will be about 48x24.   If I support just the corners would 1 or 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood work.  Not sure if 1 would be enough, can do 2 if that will work.  I am trying to avoid any 2x3 braces as it will restrict usable above the sump.  Any help will be appreciated!!!
Firefighting:  How hard can it be?  You just put the wet stuff on the red stuff right?

57 Rimless SPS/LPS in the works

OLD:180g mixed reef, 60g sump, 2 30g frag tanks, 30g macro algae tank.  300g total system.

Are you asking about no 2x4's for any part of the stand or just the tank not sitting directly on the 2x4's frame because tank is smaller then stand?

The stand will be 2x3 uprights, supporting the top surface at the corners.  I believe I am leaning towards 1 sheet of 3/4 inch with 2x3s turned on their side.  I am planning on building today, so I will take some pictures as I go.

If you sit a flat piece of ply wood on the ends of all 4 corners... No it will not be strong enough..... You will have to make a square frame for the tank at the top for the plywood to sit on.
A Indonesian fisherman once stated if we blow up the coral reef we have no future...... But if we do not we no way to feed my family now...... How sad the circumstances are today that ruin the opportunity of the future!

I just built a stand for a 20L using a design similar to this video in this video

This guy has Sketchup files for several different size stands, all made out of just 2x4s.

Good Luck!
