Black Friday
« on: November 17, 2007, 17:48:36 »
Is anyone planning on doing any black friday shopping, I've been looking around on the internet and it appears a lot of the stores have released their ads or they have been leaked out.  I'm planning on getting a decent size HD LCD TV  ;D maybe 37-42 inch.  Now that my home is remodeled and I have a minute or two a day to watch tv.  The only TV in my house for the last year, is a 15 inch LCD TV that hangs on the bedroom wall, so anything will be a great upgrade.  Is anyone else in the market for a HD TV?

i wish...I have a 60 in sony projection tv in the basement...when it dies i will get one.  I am a bit leary of HD right now because cable is upgrading to all digital i a couple years.  Not sure how that will effect HD.

Of course when I bought this TV 8 or 9 years ago.  HD was on the verge of being released and we are still waiting for full integration...

Last year my son spent the night at Wal-Mart waiting to buy a big screen at a really good price.  He said it was a blast!  They played cards all night.  He was the first one to get a TV. I think they only had something like 3 or 4 of them.

if you see any good deal on a 42, let me know.  my 42 just let loose on the red.  cant get any convergence with the red lines.  i am guessing in the neighborhood of 4-5 hundred for repair.

Walmart isn't releasing their ads till the 19th but there are scans of their ads circulating around the internet, they are going to have a 42 inch polaroid HD LCD for $798.  I don't think I'm willing to camp out but I would be willing to show up at 430 A.M.. Maybe I'  not experienced enough with this whole black friday thing but I don't see where showing up early increases your chances for a T.V.. If the store isn't open when you get there how does the guy that has been waiting there for eight hours have a better chance?  I'm sure when the doors open to these stores everyone's not going to walk into the store in a single file line.  From all the reading I've seen on the audio video website's everyone is saying the deals are not that great this year for HD buyers.

Wal-Mart is open 24/7 so the line starts early.  They get there and stand by what they want all night long.  From what I remember last year my son said they had papers that said what the item is and you get the paper then get the item.  Even if the store isn't open there is a line of people standing and I would be willing to bet if someone shows up at 4:30, the guy that's been there since midning isn't going to let him near the front.  :)  .

you have yo camp out of you dont get anything...last year we camped out to buy doggie rawhide for like 2 hours...ans got some from the last box.  So we bought $100 worth.

thats for dog treats...now compare that to a TV.....line will for at 11 or 12 the night before or sooner and they will only have a couple.  so if you really want a great deal be prepared to pay for with your time

Most stores (excluding the 24/7 stores) all form lines by a first come/ first in the door policy.  Some of them have employees policing the waiting lines.  Looks to be cold again like last year.

We've been looking for a good deal on HD TV's...looking to go fairly big.  If anyone sees a good deal, please let us know.  We've been watching tv on a 19" tv from the 1980's.  Yuck.

The best deals on tv's always seen to be a month after christmas.I bought my 52 inch lcd (dlp) 2 years ago on one of the big christmas deals marked down 3000 to $1800 and about 1-2 months after christmas it went down to $1200.Another thing to watch out for is your cable. Some cable or dish providers charge a lot extra for hd channels, and extra for there equipment to get the channels. Then some have alot more hd channels than the others as well.Just something to think about.

If you wanting a higher end HD TV doorbusters are not the way to go.  They are usually cheaper or less featured models to draw in customers so when they are out of the "special" you buy the expensive stuff.

When I eventually replace my 60" it will not be with a door buster deal.  If you are serious about a nice HD tv wait until superbowl time.  That is the time to buy a TV.  Lots of sales pre and post game.

As Matt said, dont go with a door buster and expect the best.  Also, most of the TVs are 720p that are going to be on sale.  You're going to want at least 1080p if you ever want to watch a good Blu Ray movie.  you'll pay for the difference too.

So far, the best thing I have seen deal wise is at HHgregg.  They have a 46" Sony Bravia with 1080p for $1600 or $1700.  have yet to see anything good on Plasma' for black friday

Consumer Reports had a recent article on the plasma and LCD TV's.  I'd look that over.  One of the things they said is that some high end 720p TV's have better picture quality than the low end 1080p's. And they are cheaper too.

The TV I'm looking at is the Polaroid 42" LCD HD 1080p at walmart for $798.  Its normally $1300 I believe so hopefully I'll get a chance to snatch one of those up, otherwise I'll probably just wait till closer to X-mas.  Sears has a sony television that everyone is talking about, I just can't remember what the model is.  I just have basic cable, I think I have like 26 channels which include like 4 shopping networks, 3 news channels, and the preview channel so truly I have like 25 channels :) I'm not buying the tv for the HD just so I can watch dvd's and be ready for 2009.  I think cable is the biggest rip off If you want more than 25 channels you might as well plan on spending $100 a month.  The only reason I have cable is for the road runner.

From the Sears VIP Sale, we have our first Hotter than Black Friday Sale! Sears has the Panasonic 42" Plasma HD 1080p Television (TH-42PZ77U) on sale for $1199.99.

Order during the VIP Sale Hours (6pm Nov 11 - 6am Nov 12 CST) for an extra 5% ($60) off to bring the total down to $1139.99.

Get an extra $150 off by using your Sears card to bring the total down to $989.99. (Please note that this $150 discount is by Mail-in-Rebate - rebate details here)

Delivery is ~$50 shipped to your home, however you can pick it up at your local Sears store for free (where available).

This is nearly $500 off the retail price of this television and the cheapest price it's ever been! Panasonic Plasmas are the best consumer plasma television you can buy (Pioneer Elites are almost 5x as much) and are literally in a league of their own compared to other plasma televisions.

You can check out the technical specifications of the TH-42PZ77U at Panasonic's Website.

For anyone on the fence about purchasing this television, I would highly recommend it. Sears offers a complete 30 day price-value guarantee, which beats waiting in line for hours in the cold on Black Friday.

duh, they have to screw you over somehow...they cant sell that many, they would loose money.

Of course the bigger you go the better advantage you have on black friday.  if a store has 5-10 on hand, how many people are in the market to
1. spend that much
2. buy a 65" tv

the little tvs for a hundred or two have very high depend...1000's of people want the 500 they have.  this on the other hand is a little less in demand

I think I'm just going to stick with the cheap 42" polaroid and hope it last a couple of years, I figure if I get an extended warranty Walmart will take it back if something goes wrong. I wouldnt mind getting a DLP but I have limited space for the TV.  Maybe someday I can afford a TV where the screen is taller than me.  I work with a guy that has a 65" DLP and I always give him a hard time over it because he's lucky to be 62" tall.

It's back:

Sears.com has the Hitachi 42" HD1080 Plasma HDTV with 3 HDMI Inputs
(#P42H401) for $776.00 ( http://bfads.net/Link/301 ) with free pickup
if you choose in-store delivery. Add ~$50 to have it shipped to your
house. This is an incredible deal. The Hitachi 42" HD1080 Plasma HDTV
( http://bfads.net/Link/301 ) supports 1280x1080 Resolution and has 3
HDMI Ports!

There is only one 42" Plasma HDTV that is cheaper (only by $25) this
Black Friday and it is an off-brand Staples door-buster deal. I have
never seen a 42" Plasma HDTV with these technical specifications for
anywhere near $800. It was selling for more than $1000 just a couple
weeks ago! Don't expect this deal to last long, so get it while you
can. You can purchase it by clicking here: http://bfads.net/Link/301

Just called Sears, they are sold out including the display model and won't get any more.  I looked at the link that rmstevensiii posted earlier and it doesn't even bring up the item now.  Just says item no longer available.

I have a conformation number for my order but have not received an e-mail conformation. I hope that doesn't mean anything...

The thing I printed out just says This is your order information.  Your e-mail confirmation is your receipt.  The e-mail confirmation is what I'm waiting on.  When I look at the order status on the site it says, Est. Arrival: Available in 13 - 15 days Pending e-mail confirmation.

With other places the e-mail confirmation usually comes right away after the purchase.  I've never ordered anything from SEars like this so I'm not sure how they work.

Called sears they said I won't get an e-mail until the television is at the store and ready to pick up. I then have to take the e-mail to the store for proof of purchase.  I think I would feel better if they would at least send an e-mail confirming that I ordered one.  Oh well...

Unfreaking believeable!  I've taked to 2 "customer service" women and 2 supervisors.  The first supervisor said she could give me 10% off of any television I wanted.  I said I don't think so!  I want to talk to your supervisor. He then tells me he will give me 10% off plus free shipping!!!  I told him I want to talk to his supervisor!  His of course is a day time guy so I got his name to call tomorrow.  Then I tell him how much money we have spent at sears in the past month and he gives me the corporate headquarters number.

The interesting thing is I ordered the TV at 10:15ish. I called them back around 5:something and was assured the TV was coming.  I get the e-mail at 7:55pm. The supervisor tells me the TV was cancelled around 12:15 so the idiot I talked to at 5:something didn't even give me the correct information!  What pi$$es me off the most is the fact that I could have brought one home today when I was at the mall!

So someone just told me that plasma isn't the way to go because in 10 years the gas in the tv will be gone and it can't be replaced. He said the DLP? is the better way and he could barely tell the difference on a 62 inch tv sitting side by side.  Any thoughts?

In 10 years you will need a new tv regardless would be my guess.

I havent seen DLP's up close, but a nice plasma is sweet.

Best way to tell if a plasma is high quality.  Turn it off and look at the black screen.  then turn it on a station with some sort of stantionary black object.  The more black the black looks the higher the quality.

plasma has a hard time producing black colors.  the cheaper the quality the less black it will produce.

Well, the TV we have in our bedroom is 17 years old and just this year shows a need to be replaced. The big screen we have downstairs is 6 years old with no problems so far.  However, I'm not a big TV person. I watch dancing with the stars, American idol and Da Bears (which are rarely on around here this year, yes I know they suck this year ::)  )and that's about it for me.

yea, DLP & CRT are the way to go!  If you do not care about a huge cabnet then a CRT is the best way to go due to price & pic quality. DLP & CRT are superior to plasma & due to it's ability to show colors better (BLACK) as well as not have a picture that degrades over time.  Personally I have not seen a plasma TV that has a good pic yet & true, their lifespan is not very long, 6-10 years & they are toast & any good TV should last 2-3x's that long!!

Personally, my eyes are set of a 73 in Mits. Diamond.

I thoughts sears purchased KMart?  KMart has-had no money to buy another company & sears mostly wanter their realestate.  I do agree though, I have always tried to suppors Sears however I haven't purchased anything from them in many years.  They are just to expensive & will not work on the price like other stores do.  HHGregg just doesn't sell some of the better models that I want, similar stuff that Best Buy sells.  My next TV will be purchased from either Morris or Hanson.

HH Gregg has 3 more in stock if anyone is interested!

We just hooked it up for him. It's pretty cool!  Now we get a new 32 inch flat screen for our bedroom!  ;D    Russell bought all of his appliances at Sears and they price matched everything.  I didn't have any problems with them at all.  However that will be the last thing we purchase from them!  I will be calling them as well.  I think the way they handled it sucked!  They could care less who got screwed in the process.

Also, I looked into the DLP at HH Gregg. They said they rarely get them in under 50 inches.  They don't even carry 42 inch DLP.

I did get the extended warranty for his. It was $199.00 for an extended 5 year cover/replace all warranty.  I typically don't do that but it seemed worth it.

lcd over plasma due to lifespan, plasma will burn in an image if you are not careful, color correctness, durability (plasma can break very easily)

plasma has advantages as does lcd...in the overall long run of a tv...lcd is probably better...both are great just not in the same ways

If you pause a movie and let the same image stand still on the screen for to long (i dont know an exact length) it will burn onto the screen and leave a permanent shadow of that image.  you would see this a lot in a store that keeps a tv on all day with a logo in the same place on the screen.

You have to be careful with it.  Dont pause a movie leave the screen on and go shopping it will burn the image on the screen.  This wont happen all at once, over time like in the store example

here micki read this

Besides questions about the average lifespan of plasma TVs, the question I get most from people has to do with plasma TV screen burn-in. Which raises the question: What is plasma display burn-in, and how does one know what to expect and is it still a problem?

All phosphor based display systems (CRT direct and rear view and plasma) are susceptible to image retention also known as "ghosting, image shadowing, image burn in." This is due to physical properties of phosphor and how it reacts to light and electric impulse.

The good news is that for the past couple of years quality manufacturers have been steadily working on improving plasma technology resistance to "burn in" with great success. One technique used is motion adaptive anti burn in technology, which focuses on moving the on-screen image ever so slightly. The goal is to avoid detection by the human eye, but still move the image enough to cause color changes in the pixels. A second improvement by some manufacturers is improvement in the phosphor gas itself in order to make it more resistant. The green phosphor is the most important in this process. This is also a key element in increasing phosphor and screen lifespan to CRT levels.

As a result of these advancements, a couple of prominent manufacturers now claim that plasma TVs have the same burn in resistance and susceptibility as CRT TVs. When was the last time you heard someone say that they were concerned about image burn in on their tube TV? Never?

But to digress, burn in, simply put, is a damaged pixel, whose phosphors have been prematurely aged and therefore glow less intensely than those of surrounding pixels on the plasma TV screen. The damaged or "burned in" pixel has developed a "memory" of the color information that was repeatedly fed to it in a static manner over a period of time. And that phosphor color information has actually become seared or etched into the plasma TV glass. Hence the term, "burn-in." Once these phosphors are damaged, they cannot give the same output as the other phosphors around them do. But pixels do not suffer burn-in singly. Burn-in occurs in the shape of a static image that persists on TV screens -- things like network logos, computer icons, Internet browser frames, or an entire image that has been displayed in a static manner etc. Network logos were a problem initially but they have now become sensitive to the problem and have also adapted a motion logo technology which prevents burn in.

So, how do you prevent burn-in on your brand-new plasma TV screen?

(1) Some obvious advice: Do not leave static images on your plasma TV screen for more than an hour. Turn off your unit when you are not watching it. Do not pause DVDs for more than 20 minutes at a time.

(2) Know that plasma screens are more prone to burn-in during their first 200 hours of use. When phosphors are fresh, they burn more intensely as they are ignited. This means that relatively new plasma display TVs are prone to "ghosting", which occurs when on-screen images appear to stay on the screen belatedly. This is a function of the high intensity with which new phosphors "pop," and this phenomenon usually "washes out" on its own, as the screen displays subsequent images. Displaying a bright, or moving snow image (as with a DVD or VCR with no input) will "wash" a ghost image from the screen in most cases. Many plasma manufacturers have installed anti-burn settings, which are monotone gray or snow screen settings which recalibrate pixel intensity levels uniformly - thus eliminating any image retention (ghosting). It is a good idea to run this type of program after the first 100 hours or so.

(3) Adjust the CONTRAST setting at or below 50% on your new plasma TV. These days most plasma TVs are preset to either peak or very high contrast (also called picture setting on many TVs). This forces phosphors to glow more intensely, which decreases the length of time necessary for burn-in to occur. Our advice is to reduce the contrast setting to 50% or less for the first 200 hours of use. And, be sure to avail yourself of your plasma's anti-burn-in features.

(4) Some plasma televisions burn-in more easily than others. In my experience, AliS type panels -- the ones utilized by Hitachi and Fujistu -- seem more readily given over to problems with burn-in. As well, be more wary of the 2nd and 3rd tier brands as their technology is usually not as up to date as some of the better 1st tier brands.

(5) When displaying video games and other content which have static images, use your burn-in protection features like power management settings, full-time picture shift (both vertical and horizontal), and automatic screen-saver functions. Check your Owner's Manual for further information.

(6) Realize that quality matters with burn-in as with everything else. Purchase a plasma display that has really good scaling, so that you can watch 4:3 TV programs in widescreen comfortably. It is better not to display black bars on your TV screen for prolonged periods of time (especially in the first 200 hours), so you are probably better off watching most everything in "full screen" mode. This should not be much of a problem todays selection of widescreen HDTV and DVDT content.

Also, higher quality TVs tend to be more resistant to burn-in -- though not entirely immune to it. Of the plasma displays I've owned and/or tested extensively, NEC, Sony, Pioneer, and Panasonic seemed least prone to burn-in once the plasma screen was properly broken in.

Note: There are some applications which are simply not well suited to plasma display technology. The static flight schedule signage at airports, for example. It amazes me to walk into an airport and see a ruined plasma display monitor hanging from the ceiling with what is obviously an extreme case of permanent burn- in. As LCD monitors have increased in size, they are being used to replace plasma displays in this types of setting.
The Bottom Line on Burn-In

Plasma TV burn-in is not an issue that should cause undue concern in the average user. With a modicum of caution, most plasma TVs will probably never have a problem with image retention. A viewer may experience temporary ghosting, but this is not cause for alarm.

I picked up a 42" polaroid LCD today, I'm really impressed with the TV so far I picked it up for $800, Now I think it's time to upgrade my cable so I can watch some HD discovery channel.  The T.V. has a great picture using my new magnavox upconversion dvd player but it doesn't look as great when your watching regular TV.  I hope no one picked up a TV from Rex, I went there to pick up a stand and they had horrible customer service, lets just say I stood by the cash register for an hour to return the wrong stand they gave me so basically I drove an extra 60 miles to fix a mistake they made without any monetary compensation.  The manager was a complete jerk.  He yelled across the store at the only decent sales clerk and told him to go home, how unprofessional and demeaning can you get.

Another thing about Plasma vs LCD is viewing angles.  Plasma has a much wider viewing angle than the LCD's.  It's not a problem with LCD's if you sit right in front of the tv all of the time, but can be if you have multiple seating locations spaced out in a room.

Not true according to the link posted earlier in this thread. It says a plasma has a viewing angle of 160 degrees and a LCD has a viewing angle of 175 degrees.

Well, its true on about every article I've read about them.  Maybe that article is wrong or written by a LCD lover.  Did you see that most of the advantages go to the LCD according to that article?

Nov 2007 Consumer Reports: "the (plasma) images onscreen look the same from almost any angle.......different story with LCD TVs.  Though some newer models have gotten better, most LCDs still look their best only from a limited sweet spot in front of the screen.  As you move off to the side, the picture quality deteriorates, appearing increasingly washed out or dim.  Vertical postition also matters- say, if you're sitting on the floor or watching an LCD set that's mounted above a mantelpiece.".

I was all set to get a LCD until I've read a few newer reviews.  Plasma still has some advantages in several ways.  Cost vs size, no lag on fast motion, deeper black levels and higher contrast.
