180g...300g system
« on: September 17, 2011, 18:30:07 »
Well as of 5:55 tonight the water was turned on.  Measured the RO and it is making 5 gallons an hour, or 120 gallons a day.  In 2.5 days it should be full!!!!
Firefighting:  How hard can it be?  You just put the wet stuff on the red stuff right?

yes...it definately has a booster pump.  It is a puratek 100.  Rated for 100gpd but I seem to get much more.  Doesn't hurt that I changed all the filters and membranes first and replaced the resin.  As soon as I get some of the pictures on here I will start to get them up.

Ok so I started this and never got back to it.  So lets update this a little bit.  First off, as of last night all my livestock is now in its new home.  It was a long 2 hour move, but so far things seem ok.

The first few pics are from the build, followed by some of where we stand now.

System consists of a 180 gallon RR perfecto tank, 3 30 gallon breeders, 10 gallon fuge, and around a 60 gallon sump.  I've figured it is around 300 gallons for the system.  It will all be run by an apex (as soon as I figure it out, I've turned it on, but in the process almost fried my computer so this may take a while),  4 AI Sol blue with some red and green supplementation, Super Reef Octopus 3000 external skimmer, octopus reactors for carbon and biopellets, reef octopus dual chamber calcium reactor, and a turbo twist UV Sterilizer.  The frag tanks are all lit by HO T5.  It was originally planned as 3 frag tanks, but am now leaning towards 2 for frags and one as quarantine.

So it started off as planned, slowly moved everything in and started building.  Plumbing is always a PITA, but after fixing a few leaks and changing a few things everything SEEMS to be working ok.

The tank was set up and running for about 3 weeks.  It is barebottom, and had a few rocks in it to start.  I thought it had gone thru its cycle, as everything was reading normal.  Put in about 150 frags into the tanks, and overnight everything slimed and is now white.  I am hoping it was just the shock of moving and they bleached from the increase of light.  I'm really hoping I didn't kill them all.  After this it seemed like the tank once again started to cycle.  Skimmer is working great but has that smell to it.

So I decided the rest of the tank needed to move quickly so that I could get all the live rock and cuc in.  So the move was done quickly.  Not sure how many of the frags are going to be salvagable, but I'm hoping some pull around.

So we moved in the rest of the main tank last night.  Packaged it all up, made the 2 hour trip and everything went smoothly.  Took us a couple hours to get the rock work the way I liked it, but I'm very pleased with the turnout.  All the fish went in well, and they were all instantly out swimming.  I figured they would all hide but no.  We started to arrange some corals, but that is going to be a longer process, and just take some time.

So this morning I woke up and was half expecting to see everything floating, dead corals and everything, but to my delight everything was doing just fine.  Lots of color still in the corals, and all the fish out swimming.  So 24 hours in we are doing OK.

So on to the pictures.  There arent alot, some are from an Iphone, and most are not clear.  But it is still the very beginning so you have to start somewhere.

I really like your aquascape!! Tank looks great.

Neat idea on the ceramic tile, and reason why you did that instead of starboard?? That is the first time I have seen that done...good idea. What did you use to seal it to the tank??

The powder brown is absolutely gorgeous.  I got him earlier in the year when we tore down a guys system.  I made sure he made it into my system.

The 30 gallon breeders are the frag system.  They are all tied into the main system.  Originally it was going to be one for sps, one lps, and one softies.  I have decided to limit the softies in the system, so now it is two frag tanks and a quarantine tank.

As for the tile, I knew I wanted to go bare bottom, but didnt want glass.  Starboard was really expensive.  I went with the ceramic tile after seeing another tank that used limestone tile.  Limestone is expensive, but ceramic isn't so I lined the bottom and back with it.  Since it is ceramic it should just act like a big frag plug and get covered in coraline.  It is sealed to the tank using silicone.  I did crack one piece on the back.  When I put it on I didn't push on a side first, got some air trapped in it and it cracked.

Looks like it all made the trip fine. Really like the black stand with black trim tank and black lights. It has a nice look to it. Is that a cat print I see in the first pic.

Yes...that is a cat print.  One of them decided to see if it was dry yet.  As for the black, It will have a black canopy on top with all the LED lighting once I get it all finished.

So I came home (nelsonville) today to meet the people coming to buy my old 125.  When we took the livestock out we left about 6 inches of water and the sand in.  I looked in to see if there were any snails or crabs around, and see my tube anemone out and happy.  I swore that I grabbed him, but I must have just gotten part of his tube and he stayed there.  Anyway, he looks out and happy in very dirty very cold water.  Took him over to a buddies house for a couple days to hold onto before I go back to Huber.  Just shows how resilient some stuff is.

Great looking tank.  The rock scape is really nice.  I like the tie idea.  Anxious to see how it looks after being in there awhile.

So a little bit of progress in the last few days.

The canopy is pretty much painted, just have to put it together.  Hopefully I will still get to that tonight.

Got the Apex hooked up and connected to the internet.  Going to try and learn some programming here soon so some of it can start running.

Milwaukee got me a new power supply for my meter so the calcium reactor is now up and going.  Will let it run for a few days before I check on it.

And last but not least, harvested my first batch of phytoplankton tonight.  Got two usable bottles, and split what was left so there are now two cultures going so I can harvest more often.

So far so good.  Lots of little things done such as wiring and cleaning.  It is slowly starting to shape up.  Once I get the canopy done I will get some more pictures up.

So today the canopy was finished, thanks to a little help from lazylivin.  Got it on the tank and it looks good.  Slightly too tall, but I can work out the little things later.  Also got the AI Sols mounted in the canopy, and come to find out the power supply for 1 doesnt work so now I need to get ahold of AI in the morning.  Spent over 1 hour on the phone with Neptune while they figured out what was wrong with my Apex.  They hope it was taken care of by a software upgrade so lets cross our fingers.  So all in all a good day so far.  Now  I just need to figure out how to get some light on the tank and program this apex.....

Awesome build so far! That Powder Brown is amazing. They have always been one of my favorite tangs!

I love how clean your frag/quarantine system is. And that is a really cool story about your tube anemone. We recently broke down our 120 and after about a month of leaving it sitting with just sand and a couple of inches of water.  We found many snails still happy as can be in there. It really is amazing how resilient stuff can be.

Has your tube anemone ever snacked on any of your fish?
