Any gun folks?
« on: June 09, 2009, 19:30:08 »
I just completed my training and got my liscense to carry concealed handgun and was just asking what other people carry. I have a Taurus P92 but it is a little too large to carry, a Ruger MK II but its too big and only a .22, and finally my little S&W 642 snubbie .38 special, The S&W is small enough to carry and that is what I have been doing recently, but I want a little more stopping power. Looking for a small frame .45 ACP

I'm looking into the Taurus Millenium Pro models the 145 and 745. The 145 is a double stack mag and is 10 shot while the 745 is a single stack  mag and 6 shot but it's thinner and easier to conceal.

I thought about the glock equivalent the G36 6 shot, but it's more expensive and I've read nothing but good reviews about the taurus. Only crappy thing is none of the 3 ranges around here have 1 to rent.

Yes XD45 is very nice last one I saw for sale was around $650. The 24/7 is pretty nice also but not sure if it is double action or not, I am thinking it is and is a bit cheaper but it does not have the extra safety like the XD line. If you want stopping power the Judge is top notch. Guaranteed to stop anyone. Maybe a little large to carry though unless on your thigh (or back lol). I guess if money does not matter there is always the Sig-Sauer 9mm with more add-ons than a darn cell phone.

Taurus is the way to go if you ask me. My dad has their compact .45 and he loves it, and they are double action by the way. I have my CCW as well and when I am able to buy it will be a Taurus. Great guns and they have a lifetime warranty. I took my coarse with an XD40, and though it is a very nice gun I did not care for the safety on the back of the grip. I felt like I always had to grip the gun really hard to make sure the safety was dissengaged.

If you have the money, Sig Sauer. Hands down, the slickest 9MM I have ever shot. Ugly, but nice. The Walther P99 is also very nice, and my personal favorite.

Really? Why? For a carry weapon I don't think I liek the idea of a safety. Plus its a Glock, it has built in safteys. They don't prevent a trigger pull, but an accidental discharge.

i dont want anything to catch and pull the mini trigger on the trigger (if that is considered a safety) and shoot myself or something else. i have heard this happens more than reported.  ;) but it has not happened to me ;D

Ok been doing some research and joined a taurus forum to see what they were saying about their own guns. Don't think I'm gonna go there seems like people are having a lot of problems with them and I want a completely reliable weapon for my daily carry.

So now I'm back on Glock, trying to decide between the G26 and the G36. It a debate over caliber vs. capacity. I could go with the 26 and have 10 shots of 9mm and the ability to slide in a G19 or G17 mag and have 15 or 17 shots. Or go with the G36 and have a .45ACP but only 6 shot mag. The G30 was an option of .45 with 10 shot but it's a lot wider for the double stack magazine.

The caliber doesn't matter as much as shot placement so I would go with whatever you feel most comfortable shooting.

Caliber does matter. If you want knock down power get a 45. A 40 caliber is a good in between, with 9mm, and 380 being more for penetration.

I carried and Taurus Millinium Pro PT111 for a few months.  I was small enough to be easy in a side holster or a inside the belt holster.  I have since gotten ride of it and now carry a CZ 75B.  It is a full sized gun but in a clasp style holster it is really comfortable.  It's a single double but can be carried safetyed in single action so you have a very smooth easy trigger pull.  You could also just cock it with the hammer.  The double action pull is to hard for me to carry like that.  The first shot is tuff to be accurate with.  Accurate enough to put a bullet in a torso but not in the bullseye consistantly.  It holds 16 shots and you could drive nails with it at 15 yards.  Since you want something smaller I was always very happy with my Millinium Pro.  It shot resonably well for a smaller gun.  I think the barrel was 3 1/2".  It held 10 in the clip 1 in the chamber.  It was a double action.  No external hammer.

As far as safteys go the glock is way to unsafe for me to carry in anything except a solid holster.  That is after the gun Plexico shot himself with trying to catch it as it slipped out of his waste band.  The simple mecahnical safteys that most guns have are very effective and with almost no practice you can click the saftey off during your draw with no delay in firing.  That jut seems a little harder to make a mistake with.

Caliber only matters if you can hit your target

In most cases in self defense, it will be at close range. A gun is only as effective as the person using it. But caliber is important depending on what you want the gun for.

Just bought my compact. Been looking around and gathering intel and decided on the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm compact because of the guns fit and feel in my hand. I fondled the glock 26 and the XD compact but the Smith felt much better. Got her this morning for $529 at a local gun shop. Another one only 20 minutes away was selling it for $759 (outrageous)

Put 150 rounds winchester white box through it without a hitch. Shoots very accurate for a compact. I'm still more accutate with the Taurus P92 but it's a lot larger gun.

Also picked up a box of 147 grain winchester Super X silver tip hollow points to keep loaded in it for carry.

Enjoy.

Pretty ^_^ I use my Colt Detective Special though I've been saving up for a Kimber Pro-Carry II. Pricey, but I shot my friends up north and it was amazing.
On a comical Taurus note, my father-in-law is now carrying his Taurus "Judge". Good lord.

My friend sent this to me yesterday... looks like he already spent all his graduation money.   Its an AR style carbine chambered for 45 APC.  Apparently he's going all out because he started the paperwork for a suppressor.  :o

Well my father decided since he doesn't really shoot anymore that he would go ahead and pass down what he has to me, so I can enjoy shooting them.

I had a MAK-90 awhile ago....there was a shop over in Enon that sold parts/kits for the AK series. I ended up with a folding stock among other things for mine. I had to sell it not too long after I put the stock/pistol grip on it.

As for your Romanian SAR-3 AK-47 5.56x54mm, I believe its actually an AK-74 since its in that caliber. The AK-47 was chambered for 7.62x39 and they wanted something similar specs as the .223 round we use in the M16. The .223 round comes out to something like 5.56x45. The Russian army went with the 5.56x54 for the AK-74. Nice pictures and very nice weapons.

The do believe AK-74 is actually a 5.45x39mm. Them Russians wouldn't use a NATO caliber they are better than that.

Ya I've got few rounds for Sunday. I'm taking the Romanian 5.56mm AK because I don't have any magazines for the 7.62mm one. Dad gave me his ammo also, so I've got about 700 rounds of 5.56x45mm, 400 rounds of 7.62x39mm, 300 .357 magnum, 200 .22 win mag, 100 .410 shot shells, and 2500 .22 long rifle.
