Radio antenna booster?
« on: February 16, 2010, 02:31:06 »
Is there any such thing that is reliable?  I googled it but have my doubts about what turned up.  Maybe I'm not using the right terminology.

My Impala just loses signal all the time driving around town.  I'm tired of it, and want to get something if possible so that when I tune to a local station I can just stay on it.

I know there are some car buffs and probably audiophiles here.  Can you offer a suggestion?  Thanks.

Steph, my Impala has the antenna built in to the rear window.  Is that how yours is, too?  I've had some el cheapo boosters in the past, but the problem you can sometimes run into is that they will boost the signal that is interfering with the signal you want, too...  You might want to have Tom check that the antenna cable is snug in the back of the radio, too.

Another problem for antennas built into the rear window is window tinting. I have a very good friend who owns ProAudio and he informed me of this when I had a new system installed in my car that has limo tint on the doors and rear window. The darker the tint the worse it is according to him.

I'll have him check the wiring then.  Thanks.

Here's another question.  Ours is a 2007 and before we got it (slightly used) it did have one of those 3-4 inch black things sticking up at the junction of the roof and the rear window.  I thought it was the antenna, but Tom doesn't think so.  I see many of these cars around and they all have this little do-dad sticking up.  Could that be the problem?  Was that an antenna?  What is an "antenna built into the rear window"?

Is your vehicle a GM product? Might be the GPS antenna for OnStar.

How about something like this:

Yes, that sounds like what I have in mind.  Not expensive, either.

ETA:  I have Onstar but not XM.  I'd love to have XM!
