Want any info on Frogspawn...help
« on: February 15, 2009, 20:37:00 »
Hey all! I am thinking of adding a small frogspawn to one of my tanks in an attempt to have it act as host to my very new and small Gold Stripe Maroon Clown. I would prefer not to use an BTA as host due to me being so new the reef side of saltwater. I have successfully had a fish only saltwater setup for a number of years. I am just now starting my research on adding one of these guys, so I would love to hear from anyone with some knowledge of frogspawn.

THANKS

Frogspawn are an excellent starter coral if you know your basics. I have found that clownfish, without an anemone in the tank, will host something such as a powerhead or other random place in the tank. I had some that eventually hosted some pulsing xenia. Now mine just hides back in the rock at night.

It is very doubtful that your clown will hop into the frogspawn, it could take months or simply never happen. Also, it depends if you clown is wild or bred. I hear that the wild ones will host corals more readily - I am unsure of the accuracy of this statement.

To keep frogspawn you do not need a ton of lighting, although, calcium and alkalinity levels will need to be maintained for good  health and growth. They are fairly delicate and prefer low flow. Also, if the fleshy end of the skeleton gets smashed or touched too roughly it can do serious damage. When moving them around it is good practice to turn off all flow, pick up the coral from somewhere you have a good grip on (they get slimy) and gently shake it. This removes the water from the tissue making it easier to move around and out of the tank if necessary.

I have had a 20ish head frogspawn in the tank for at least three years and I have never seen my clowns near it they usually just swim together in the corner of the tank.

I got a mated pair of clownfish and they went straight for my frogspawn and are hosting in it now. I have a GBTA and wish they would host it, but they won't do it!

Clowns can also damage the coral in which they are hosting.

my clowns prefer my favia brain over the frogspawn sadly. i think it'd be cool for them to host in it!

so far my frogspawn is doing great near the bottom of the tank with low to moderate flow.

one of my favorite corals and like logzor said, a good beginner coral too!

kennv431 - I have a small 2 headed frogspawn you can have if you want it. I'm not a big fan of them, and I'm wanting to get rid of most of the LPS in my tank. Plus, it's hard to find an area in my tank with low enough flow for it. It opens up really well when I turn off the powerheads to feed the tank, but then shrinks back up when the flow is back on. It is an all green one, let me know if you want it.
