Stain
« on: August 18, 2012, 17:30:24 »
Just finished my stands for my tank and I'm staining them with a deck stain to make them water resistant. Is this what most people use for there stands? I got a high quailty one. Just wanted to make sure it wouldnt release anything that would effect the tank. Someone had said something about that but wasn't sure if it was a concern. Also i want to paint the bottom and back of the tank. Also what is a good paint to use on glass that would  also not peel due to salt water? Thanks!

We just used furniture stain & poly. As far as paint for the back, we used the cheapest latex paint we could find. To do the back of our 180 took less than a quart.

I also used a GOOD quality furniture stain and poly.  As for paint, I've used oil based and latex......both have held up well, but I also think in time, any paint on the outside of glass in a water prone environment will need touched up.  So far, on my current tank, I'm 2 years in without any noticeable peeling.

On my stand and canopy I used Zinnser 123 primer (white), then stained with Minwax stain (jacobean) and followed it up with 3-4 coats of polyurathane (semigloss). Everything was bought @ menards.  Turned out great...

You will be fine, if you like the color, and all go with it...

a few good coats of poly will keep it looking like new for a very long time...
