Any ideas
« on: March 07, 2010, 13:36:58 »
This morning I notice two spots on my pearlberry.  And that is not a flatworm on the coral, I scrapped the area with a hard syphon tube, it was all tissue.   Coral has been actively growing, so I'm thinking it was a critter or a sting.

Do you have an urchin, clown goby, or emerald crabs?

Just to make sure I'm seeing what you're seeing - does it look like tissue is missing?  Any sort of bite marks near the coral (like on rocks) or anything?

None of the above creatures.  No visible bite marks anywhere else, or any other coral.  Because of the location, I did wonder if one of my tangs was not paying attention to where he was biting when he was nibbling on the rock work.

Yes the tissue was missing in that circular pattern, and was apparently tissue in the center.  I did scrap at it to be sure it wasn't anything still on the coral.

Below this Pearlberry, is a favia or favites coral.   It can get a good set of sweeper tentacles at night, but I've never seen them get close to the Pearlberry.

Hm, if it was an outer ring of tissue missing with an inner ring of tissue left, I'll guess it was an accidental bite by a fish.

But, I'd still keep an eye out at night for a gorilla crab or other evil creature

You will be amazed at what damage a favid will inflict.

I would expect to see more damage if it was a sting.  A sting damage isn't usually inflicted by a circle...it's more of an engulfing of the tissue within reach.  That center bit of tissue intact is the odd part of the equation.
