Flatworms in School Tank
« on: October 08, 2012, 08:10:18 »
Well the worms either came from the bagged live sand that I purchased, or from the live rock that I took out of my display tank which is a bigger problem  :o.  The tank has been up and running for 5 days but this weekend there was a power spike in our area, causing our lights to flicker at home and pop the circuit breaker at the school that the tank is on.  The temp was 65 this morning when I went into the school and these flatworms were collected in the lower corner of the tank, and I saw some on the toadstool that is in the tank.

There are hundreds of worms out there so asking for help to ID is easier.  I assume that I need a flatworm removal treatment for it, but which one to use?  These appeared since Friday afternoon.  The good news that the only thing in the tank is a toadstool and a few purple shrooms.  I can treat the tank, do a water change, treat again, and do another water change.

Advice????

Thanks

I've used flatworm exit in the past....just have carbon on hand to remove any toxins that are released when the worms die.  There are much worse things to have.

I would recommend flatworm exit here as well. at least its in the early stage of the tank.

Well I managed to eliminate the flatworms from the school tank a month or two ago.

However I found the source of the flatworms, they hitchhiked into the school tank from mine.  So far I have treated twice with Flatworm eXit and have got 'most' of them.  I'm not sure if I should treat my tank again with Flatworm eXit or go for the fish assassin route.

If I go the assassin route, what is recommended?  The tank is an 80g and does have a couple of peppermint shrimp and one blood red shrimp so I don't want to have the assassin kill them.  I have heard that a six line wrasse may be a good choice.

Opinions??? Suggestions???  I read most of the older posts regarding what others have gone through....

Melanurus wrasses are supposed to be good for eating flatworms also.

Are the Melanurus agressive to inverts?

Not normally, but it is a wrasse.

What kind of inverts are in the tank?

Cleaner shrimp do okay with Wrasses,  but those shrimp will probably not make it, unless they learn to hide during the day.   Snails are fine.

The wrasses are jumpers too, so there would need to be a top on the tank

Any livestock you put I there will be hit or miss. We put a green wrasse in our tank to eat the fw, it eats a few but not near enough. We put 2 mandrins in to eat them also, 1 eats them like crazy, the other never touches them. I also have tried fw exit twice to no avail. I am back to sucking them out with some tubing.
