Ohioreef 96g Corner Tank
« on: November 11, 2020, 21:19:57 »
I'm back!!! Kinda....more like in the process of being back. LOL

After ohioreefjr got his tank I started feeling that itch again. Over the last few years I'd dabbled in smaller tanks, usually a Bio-Cube, but just did not like them. Not the same as the bigger tanks, plus things go wrong very fast in a smaller tank!

I have a spot where a corner tank would be perfect, but didn't want a smaller one, I wanted one of the 90-100g ones. After checking around I learned they don't make them anymore. I was devastated so I started considering a 110 or 120 and place it where my old tank was, but wasn't really sold on that.

When I first started looking, I had posted a WTB ad on craigslist and then totally forgot about it. I was in talks with a gentleman for a 120g and when I tried to set up a time to pick it up, he ghosted me. I was mad!! A couple days after that I get an email from a gentleman down in California, KY saying he has a 96g corner tank with all the "fixins" for sale!! Yeah!! Exactly what I was looking for. We set up a time to go pick it up and a few days before picking it up, he texts me and says he just tested positive for Covid, but that I could still have it if I didn't mind waiting. Seeing as how it was the exact tank I wanted, a few more days wasn't going to hurt.

Fast forward to today, my son-in-law and I drove down and I brought my "new" tank home! Not much to look at right now, but at least it's in the house.

Plans at this point are to scrape the old paint off and repaint it with Krylon blue paint. Then I need to design and have a sump built. It came with a wet/dry, but I think I'm going to change as I want a refuge.

I've attached a photo of it as it sits right now. I'll keep everyone posted as I put it all together. I have some LR in ohioreefjr's sump so hopefully I'll have an abbreviated cycle.

Finally got around to doing some work on the tank today.

Moved it into a back bedroom so I could strip the blue paint off and repaint the side glass black. The old paint peeled right off and I started painting the black on. Went a little heavy on first coat and got some running, but I think I can make it work.

Next I traced the edge of the stand, pulled it out of the corner and cut the carpet out. We're planning on eventually pulling the carpet up and laying wood laminate and figured it'd be easier to pull the carpet now and then just trim around the stand when I pout the laminate down.

While I had the stand out, I noticed some issues. The bottom had some rotten spots and a piece of the trim around the front has come loose. I'm pretty sure it's just cosmetic, but I pulled the bottom off and I'm going to put a new bottom on. I think the trim piece will fall back in place when I put the new bottom on. Considering putting some extra vertical bracing in just to feel better.

Hopefully I can have things back together and ready for water in a week or so.

It’s slow going...I’m ready to throw some rock and water in...LOL...but not quite there yet. Easier to reinforce now than later with 1000lbs of water sitting on the stand.

Swept the remaining sand out of the bottom and cleaned the glass. She's ready to be moved back onto the stand, after I decide what sump I'm going with.

The sump I'm thinking of going with, a Trigger 18C cube sump, won't fit through the doors and will have to be placed before putting the tank back onto the stand. The other one I'm considering is a Trigger Sapphire/Emerald 26. Any thoughts on those two?

I'm hoping to find one of them on sale on Cyber Monday.

Have a sump coming. Emailed Trigger Systems inquiring whether they had any blemished 26" sumps. Lucky for me they have a Sapphire 26 for over $100 off retail so I ordered it.

Good choice. Took me over 3 months to figure out where the blemish was and found it by feel moving equipment around haha! Won’t regret it.

I haven’t totally figured that out yet. Ohioreefjr gave me a couple Ocean Revives he had to play with. Figured once I got the rock and everything going I’d play around with lighting while it cycles. I have a canopy for it, but I’m not sure it’s going to work without some modification.

Do you happen to have a photo of your set-up? I’m always open to ideas.

Nice. I have a Trigger Systems Sapphire26 that I was able to get as “blemish”. Still looking for the blemish, but I’m not complaining. Going to work on getting it plumbed and going tonight so I can get some of the nasty cloudiness out from the substrate. Then put in some live rock and get the cycle going!

I have water flowing!! I have a slow drip where the drain hose meets the barb fitting at the sump end. It’s dripping into the sump so not a big deal, but I will need to address it. Does anyone know where I can get an 18” drain hose? I had to cut mine down and that’s why I have the drip. I had to cut off the slip fitting. If you look at the tank end you can see what should be there.

Worked on aquascaping today. Here’s some photos of the progress, including one of the dog “trimming” a piece of rock. LOL  I tried setting up a “trial” set up on the floor, but by the time I got it transferred to the tank, there was no resemblance to what I originally had. After getting the rock in, I put the canopy on and some light. I will be definitely going a different route on the lighting as this one is not near enough light.

After lazy ID’d my skimmer I did some research. It didn’t have the best of reviews. I really liked the ASM Mini-G I had on my 75 so I started looking for an ASM. Found an ASM G-1 or G-1X on ReefCentral for a good price. It’s on its way!

Got some cash for Christmas with the stipulation it had to be used on my tank. Went down to Gerber's today and picked up some coralline covered LR to seed my tank and a bottle of Fritz-Zyme to help the cycle along.

That’s kinda what I was thinking. Be a good place for a show coral or a couple nice clams.

Received my “new to me” ASM G-1(X?) skimmer today. Think I’ll like it better than the one I currently have. Loved the Mini-G I had on my 75.

Need some thoughts on lighting. With the corner tank being oddly shaped, one can’t just throw a light on there. An earlier post showed an idea, but I’m leary of an open top tank.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks

When I rebooted my 55-gallon tank, I used BIO-Spira and put in a yellow tang the next day.  He was alone for 30 days until I put my next fish in.  Worked like a champ.  I assume Fritz-Zyme would work the same.

I had some ammonia and nitrite a couple days ago before I added the Fritz-Zyme. I'm going to check again tonight and see if I still show any. If it's dropped to zero I may try adding a couple small fish.

Geez...look at me, going against everything I preach about waiting...LOL...but the grandkids want to see some fish..LOL

I have used the Fritz when setting up my quarantine tank, to seed my sponge filters. Though they were small, mollies, I added them immediately with no issues. I also add some when I do water changes in QT tank, has kept it pretty stable.

The structure looks good.  I think that is man made reef rock where they put dye in with the mortar to make it look like coraline algae.

I specifically asked the guy at Gerber’s whether that was the case. I told him I wanted real coralline. He assured me it was the real deal, but I had my concerns. I’m now!!

Have to be careful about who you talk to at Gerber’s. Spend 3-5 minutes talking to them about the hobby and you’ll be able to tell if they know what they’re talking about. I’m sure myself or someone else here would be more than willing to scrape some coralline off our tanks for you! :) I’ve had good success spreading coralline faster by scraping it off snail shells etc.

you can tell real quick if its the manmade rock.  Pull a piece out and you will be able to see "patches" of what appears to be cement throughout the rock.   I am with Lazy looks like the manmade stuff.  Also be careful with Aiptasia on them - especially coming from Gerbers.  I am fighting that fight in one of my tanks right now (pulled everything out except the rock and the kenya tree corals)  based on that same manmade rock from Gerbers -- the "fake" stuff is now sitting in a bucket dried out

It may very well be man made and I don't have an issue with that. If it is they did a pretty good job. I'm upset that if it is the colored stuff I was mislead when I purchased it.

I'm gonna look closer tonight and try to get a couple closer up pics.

I looked it over and didn't notice any aiptasia or other nasties on it.

Well, Lazy confirmed it is indeed "fake" coralline. Oh well, lesson learned. Should've gone with my gut, I was skeptical. I'll get some scrapings to get the coralline seeded.

I so hate waiting for the cycle....want some fish and color in there!

Picked up an older Reefkeeper 2 controller off FB Marketplace tonight. All I’m needing is to control the lights and heater so it should work well. For $40 I’m not out much if it doesn’t work.

Also added four clownfish, some coralline scrapings and a small coral from Lazy a few days ago. Everything seems to be doing well. Love to watch the clownfish swim to the front glass when they see me coming to feed them.

Got my RO/DI unit back up and running. Replaced all filters including the membrane. Don’t have a large storage container yet so I have a sophisticated gallon jug filling system...LOL

I need a pressure pump, but they are stupid expensive. If anyone happens to have one laying around they’d like to get rid of, drop me a line.

Got my $50 Gyre XF330 put in the tank this evening. That bad boy moves some water, 2350gph according to the specs. Have it turned down to 30% to keep from blowing sand! I need to work on redirecting it, but for now turning it down will work.

Have a RK 2 coming tomorrow so I’ll get some basic controller functions.

Well, I drained the overflow and finally got the bugger out only to have him, I’m assuming, head right back there after I put everything back together.....

That sucks. Is it doing it at night or during the day. I know if they don't have a nem they sleep right on the surface sometimes, or is it just jumping over?

There is a small spot in the overflow that is big enough he can swim over. I tried to superglue a piece of plastic over the opening but the superglue wouldn’t stick.

He literally went back over not half an hour after I fished him out.

Went to Huber and picked up a couple Ocean Revive lights for the tank tonight. Was originally planning on buying a used MarsAqua 300W light that was basically two of the black boxes end to end, but was the perfect length for my tank. Well after several discussions the guy ghosted me, but then these Ocean Revives came along and will, in the long run, probably be the better lights. I hate being ghosted, but both times it’s happened I’ve ended up with something better!!

Went down to Gerber’s and picked up a blue tang this afternoon. Was hoping for a yellow tang, but they didn’t have any. Found another store that did but they want $150 for one. Can’t convince myself to pay that much for a fish.

Got home and decided to get my new lights set up. Hacked up my canopy and got them mounted. Not the best looking, but they are functional. May eventually run some trim around them.

What settings do you have the lights on? You should pick up the PAR meter to dial it in. Also keep heavy blues on the lights. I wouldn’t personally go over 20% on the white channel - but maybe some others can chime in.

Right now blue and white are both set to 5% because that’s what it defaulted to. I don’t have any corals in there yet except for a small one lazy gave me but I was plan on bumping blues up to 25 tonight probably the whites to 15 or 20. I intend to borrow the par meter some time to get a feel for where my readings are in various areas of the tank. Figured I’d eventually get the blues up to hundred percent white whatever I feel I like the color.

The RK II I ordered has been flaky. It randomly shut everything down and then back on yesterday.

Good excuse to order an Apex so this evening I ordered an Apex EL from Matt’s Corals in Columbus.

Just some of my CUC from saltybottomreefcompany.com. I got 5 peppermints, 2 cucumbers, 2 emerald crabs, 2 porcelain crabs and a whole bunch of various snails and hermits. The package I got comes with 2 urchins, but I didn’t want them so they threw in an extra peppermint and a flame scallop (I know, I know).

I’m hoping they make short order of my currentl algae problem.

Called down to Aquarium Artisans this morning and they had 5 YTs in stock. Asked if they could hold one and they did! Ran down after work and picked one up. Hated paying what I did, but it was a birthday gift from my mom so I guess I didn’t pay for it. LOL

Then ran over to Cincinnati Coral and picked up a frogspawn and Duncan frag. I’ll have to wait until lights on for pics of those.

Your frogspawn has a lot of skeleton on it and a baby head growing. That’s great. All that skeleton will help it grow new heads faster.

Sad day.....lost my YT to, what I'm certain was, marine velvet. Lost a clown a couple days ago, but he had no outward signs of anything. I can only assume it was velvet as well. I am currently dosing with Polyp Labs Medic so hopefully the remaining two clowns can beat it.

Sorry to hear that. My tank is currently fallow because of velvet. I have done a lot of research over the last month and once velvet is present  you have to quarantine survivors and go fallow for 76 days.  It sucks but I’ve been using the time to add more frags and upgrade equipment. Good luck

I've been reading a lot today as well and that looks like that's the direction I'll be taking also. Problem is going to be whether I can catch the two remaining clowns.

My clown was easy to catch. Early morning feed with lights off and quick catch with the net. Got the others with the clubs fish trap. Just request to use it if you need it.

Well, sad sad day....ended up losing all my fish to what I can only believe was velvet.

The plan is to leave the tank fishless for 76 days and set up a QT for all new fish from now on. I gambled when I had a tank years ago and never had any issues. Not so lucky this time.

I have set up a 20L as a QT tank. Added a couple cute plastic decorations for the grandkids....

Looks like I need to tone down the blues a little. Thinking of picking up some clowns and start all over again.

Just a suggestion, I would consider using a sponge filter as well as the HOB filter. I actually use 3 in my twenty quarantine. 2 that are hooked up to an air pump and one large one that I seeded in my sump that is not hooked up. Seems to work pretty well so far. I will occasionally run a HOB filter just to remove any organics.

Thanks. I currently have a piece of foam in my the sump of my DT that I plan on moving over and placing in the HOB filter. I have bio media in the HOB as well. I seeded the QT with nitrifying bacteria as well.

Curious, why do you suggest the extra sponge filter?

Yes, been a long while! LOL

I lucked out with my prior tanks. Bound to happen, I suppose. Have a nice little QT tank set up now. I’ll use it while my tank sits fishless for a few weeks.

My son informed that I had Squidworth and Spongebob’s houses backwards. I had to switch them because it was driving him nuts. LOL

I have rationalized in my mind that the sponge with no flow would be able to establish some anaerobic bacteria and help with nitrate build up. I have no proof that it works, but the fish I have ran through there are doing well. So I guess that is proof enough for me. I always had trouble getting fish through quarantine, but with this current setup and using the Paraguard, I am having good results.

That doesn’t not make sense. Any extra space for bacteria would seem to be a positive.

I’ve read conflicting reports on Paraguard. Some say it’s great, others say without copper it won’t work.

I ended up ordering some Cupramine. Seems a little safer than than straight copper, from what I’ve read.

My ASM skimmer pump but the dust and the replacement makes it too big to fit in my sump. Ended up purchasing an Icecap K1-130 as a replacement.

First night running we got woke up to an awful racket coming from the new skimmer pump. Also my Apex was showing it was drawing 40W when it’s only rated to draw 8W!

Emailed Icecap with a video of the pump making noise and an explanation of the power draw issue. I have a new pump on the way!! Nice to find some decent customer service!!

I got one right after the ban but it developed velvet and I lost it along with every fish in my tank.

Got this YT along with the blue hippo and sailfin from a fellow reefer here for a very good price. Just pulled them from 28+ days QT in copper to make sure there was no velvet or ich.

I was plaged by either velvet or ich for the first 5 months of starting my tank up... I bought two clown fish that had it and they died from it (didn't use to QT because I never did with freshwater and was lucky for years). Bought a Kole Tang and shrimp goby pair, added them to the display a couple weeks later, the tang got sick and died.

I then set up a QT tank and spent a full week trying to get the Goby out to treat and QT, I finally got him and was so relieved. Treated him and let the tank fallow for a full 90 days. Added him back and started QTing some new clowns and added them once they were finished and all has been well since.

Now I QT AND treat every fish before adding it to the tank. I also QT all coral and Inverts before adding unless I get them from someone I know and trust. Learned my lesson the hard way as most do I suppose. Definitely wasn't a fun one, nor was it a nice introduction to the hobby. It did give me plenty of time to focus on coral and I learned a lot during that time so all's well that ends well!

Sounds very similar to my story, LOL. Had a tank several years ago, never QT’d anything and never had any problems. Fast forward to now, I set up a new tank and first batch of fish I add get wiped out. Very heartbreaking. I ended letting the tank sit fallow and will now QT all new fish in Cu before adding to the tank.
