Title: The Twin Tanks
Post by: Ohioreefjr on December 30, 2019, 22:14:07
In this thread, I plan to show off my "twin" biocubes. The first tank is an older 29 gallon biocube that I changed out the lights from the CFL's to the LED's, which I plan to undo as the LED's don't provide the ability to grow some of the corals I want to. I started a previous thread for this tank, however, due to my wife giving birth to our third child, and some health issues for her following, the tank was almost completely wiped out. I am slowly rebuilding it starting with a new clean up crew I ordered. The second tank is my dad's 32 gallon biocube with LED's. These two tanks compliment each other nicely and I am looking forward to bringing both tanks to their glory days.

The current stocking is:

Tank 1 (29 Gallon)
Three stripe damsel
Lemon damsel
Peppermint shrimp
Small frag of pulsing xenia
A giant red mushroom about the size of a CD
and a few snails and hermits.

Tank 2 (32 gallon)
an oscellaris clown fish
A coral beauty
A lawnmower blenny
two peppermint shrimp
a large ruby mithrax crab
A rock with some GSP
and some snails and hermits

I plan to post some pictures over the next few days to really update the progress on the twin tanks

Following along!  I’ve seen my share of ups and downs over the past decade, myself, including a 5 year hiatus from the hobby.

After today’s order, I got a few more clean up crew members to help out the tanks. Today I received my reef cleaners purchase, and tomorrow my aquarium depot purchase should be in. Today I got two pitho crabs, one green porcelain crab, 2 blue porcelain crabs, 10 zig zag bumblebee snails, and about 30 dwarf Cerith snails to split between the two tanks. I had also ordered a second green porcelain crab and an emerald grab whom didn’t survive the journey. Here are a few pics of the pitho crabs. I highly recommend these little guys. They have a personality of their own!

Here are a few pictures of the tanks pre-cleanup crew. With a little glass cleaning and some help from a cleanup crew I’m hoping the tank starts looking good again. The first 3 pictures are the 29 gallon, the next 3 are the 32.

Here are the pictures. It wouldn't let me upload them on my phone earlier.

Got some work ahead of you. Looking forward to seeing this come together

A few days with the cleanup crew as well as some cleaning and scrubbing on my end, the tanks are looking much better. My goal is to keep the progress going and begin to add some more corals to really start getting the tank back to what I originally had them looking like.

I guess one of the Emerald Crabs in my 32 gallon didn't want to miss out on the good food passing through the overflow.

Here is a little tank update, my clownfish loves hosting in my GSP in the 32 gallon, which is pretty cool in my opinion. I’m still having a hard time with the diatoms and hair algae, and just can’t get them to stay away tho!

Are you using RO/DI water? Are you possibly over feeding causing the algae issues?

Yes I am using RO/DI. I do believe that part of my problem may be the over feeding. I’m currently cutting back in the amount and frequency of feedings, hoping that it will help

After quite a bit of neglect, I have let the hair algae get out of control. I got a sea hare and am looking forward to the progress!

I added a Black Sea hare. They are some of the best and most effective algae eaters. Plus, they are about the only thing I have ever seen consistently eat hair algae. Here is the live aquaria link to the sea hare. These guys are all the same. I got one from Gerbers, and I had never seen a black one, which is why I got him.
