28 Gallon Nano Cube LED
« on: October 02, 2011, 21:37:07 »
So I came home to a new 28 Gallon Nano Cube LED about 2 weeks ago. It's been at least 4 years since I've had a tank setup. Sold everything fish related on craigslist about 2 years ago. Wife and I started watching 'Tanked' and it sparked the flame again.

Got my stand built and painted yesterday. I opted to build my own, 1 since I had the materials leftover from another project, and 2 figured I could build it for half the cost of a nano stand. So that just means I've got extra money to spend on other supplies :) . Went to Aquatic Specialists and picked up Live Rock, and RO water today, and thus begins day 1 of my cycle...

Still a bit cloudy. Overall pleased with my rock placement, not that I'm an expert on Aquascaping. Managed to leave some nice caves, and places for future dwellers to hide.

Forgive the poor photo, took it using my Droid.

Welcome back to the hobby. Don't forget to feed your tank daily to get your cycle started.

Thanks. Never thought about that. I had thought the live rock and sand was enough to start. What would you suggest feeding it exactly?

My wife picked it up at Gerbers. The lighting is very bright, thats as far as my experiance with lighting goes. This will be my first tank capable of sustaining corals. It has 25 3 Watt Daylight @ 14K,
4 3 Watt Dawn/Dusk Actinics @ 466nm, and 2 1 Watt Moon 456nm. Each have seperate cords for timer controls. Total of 89 Watts.

As you know bacteria is what converts harmful ammonia to nitrite then to nitrate. The population of bacteria will match the food present in the system. More food = more bacteria less food less bacteria. You may have a totally cycled tank but as soon as you add fish you add food and the amount of bacteria present can't keep up with the amount of food and ammonia and nitrites will build up. So add the amount and type of food daily that you plan on feeding your fish and the bacteria will grow to support it and your tank will then be ready to support the fish.

Had a nice suprise when I turned on the lights this evening, a chiton.

Have found several other hitch hikers also. Few snails, of course bristleworms, and what I believe to be an Asterina Starfish (going to remove him next time I see him just to be safe)

You should add that to the POTM thread.
