Overflow vs Return Pump.
« on: December 26, 2006, 04:13:42 »
Hello all, have a quick question about the return pump I just ordered. I recently bought an overflow from Joel that he said would flow around 500 to 600 gph, so for a return pump I ordered the Quiet One 2200 which flows 581 gph at zero head. This should work right? Does anyone forsee any problems with my pump selection, or have I made a good decision? Thanks again.

shouldn't be a problem because your pump willl probably flow less then 500 gph at 4-5ft head.  Even if it ran the full 581 or whatever it is, you would still be fine :)

Should be alright although it might be a little weak if you are wanting more return than about 300 gallons.  With a 5' head pressure alone (estimate from sump up to top of the tank) you loose about 200-250 gallons with that pump.  Every elbow adds to the head pressure loss.  See here and click on more info for head pressure loss curve:

A 3000 or 4000 might be a better choice if your wanting 5-600 gph.  You can add a ball valve after the pump to restrict the flow back to the tank if the overflow can't handle it.

Another thing to consider, just because they state the overflow can handle 5-600gph doesn't mean it will! I was told mine would handle that much but anything over about 400gph and it can't keep up.

So I should be ok then? I bought the pump from Pet Solutions out of Beavercreek they are having a sale right now at $24.99 down from $39.99. I thought that was a pretty good deal. Even if it is a little weak this means I will have more exposure to the fuge which is not a bad thing right? I have read article about people overrunning with to much flow making their sumps/fuges less effective.

They are still ship only.  If you didn't know they are Jacks Aquarium's Outlet.  You can order from a local store to skip shipping if you like.

But I don't think you get the online price going to the store. Usually it's 2-3x the price in the store vs online.

The online prices are way better, and the shipping is quick. I ordered this pump Tuesday at around 3:30am, and received it today. Thats pretty fast.
