Macro Algae ID
« on: December 07, 2011, 23:11:58 »
Here are a few plants that I've got in my tank. If you could let me know if they are good or bad and a name that would be great. And I think I will be removing the big green leafy one thats covering the rock, it grows really fast and I want more room for coral. Although my hermits may be mad at me for taking away their hiding place lol.

The big leafy one is a caulerpa species (serrulata or brachypus, maybe?), It can be very hard to get rid of, and it has a tendency to up and melt ('go sexual'), dumping nitrates, phosphates, and nasty toxins in your tank.

The red one could be innocuous, personally I'd just keep an eye on it.

The fuzzy green one could be hair algae- I'd remove it. The greenish brown one? I can't ID it, but I'd probably remove it, or at least put the rock in my fuge until I could look it up.

That depends on what you think about Caulerpa sp. and where you want it :)

Seeing one do this..

Which gives your tank a pale green fog and a nitrate spike.. not fun.
