pulsing xenia
« on: April 23, 2012, 08:33:11 »
Got this cuz it looked cool. Found out it can spread like a weed. In 1 week it has already spiung about 3 new sarts & has grown taller then when we got it. Not going to fight it.

Is it pulsing xenia or anthelia?

They both can spread like wild fire, though pulsing xenia tends to be more finnicky and less prone to spread in most people's tanks.... But if you have true xenia and it is growing happily and "pulsing", I say right on, I like it... Anthelia on the other hand... No thank you ;)

I only ask because I have noticed some anthelia being listed as pulsing xenia lately, and they are completely different.

I was told it is pulsing xenia, it does pulse or open & close its hand. It is growing & spread a little already on the rock I got it on. Does anthelia open & close like that? If so how else can I tell the differance?

It's debatable, some people say anthelia pulse, others say no... I can say I have never seen anthelia pulse

What color is it? anthelia typically has a duller coloration, white, grey, browns(though some can be pinkish red or even blue).
Anthelia generally has a taller longer stalk, and the hands(tentacles) are usually longer and more pronounced.

Google Waving hand coral and Pulsing Xenia, You will see they have differences...

Though it doesnt really matter, I was just curious. I personally like pulsing Xenia, and think it's worth keeping.

Here is a pic. What I seen on the net it doesn't look like either to me. But I would like to know just so I don't tell people the wrong thing.

I would say it is definitely xenia.  I am assuming it is pulsing, the "hands" opening and closing.
Depending on the additives in your water (or just water quality) will determine the amount of pulsing.  I couldnever get mine to pulse frequently, where a friend of mine had his going crazy, pulsing and growing!
Thanks and God Bless,
John

it is easily fragged/removed and I always had a problem with other corals picking on it not the other way around, they either stung it back or clouded it out.

This stuff is close to getting out of control. I even have it growing in my sump. Want some, come & get it. I am going to have to just pitch it. I really don't like doing that.

I'd love some!!! but my tank is still cycling..  I don't like anthelia, cause it was a mess in my 55, but I really like pulsing xenia.

It looks like purple xenia to me.  It's an invasive demon.  It took over my dads 75 gallon, and I traded tons of it to Gerber's saltwater warehouse.

I would not pitch it... you can trade it to gerbers or else where for store credit.

I trimed it up today. I scraped all the rock that it spread to. But I just couldn't thro it out. I thru it in the sump instead. So it will be there when you are ready. If not I can trim you some more. No problem.

That looks really cool, Steve. Only thing I have that moves with the currents in my tank are star poylps which are spreading fairly rapidly.
