Test Kits --- Salifert vs. API
« on: August 01, 2011, 19:49:47 »
Wow.... First time I have used Salifert test kits.... They blow the API Reef Master Test Kits that I have been using out of the water.  The ease to read and accuracy level that they measure to is tons easier to read.  Have I just been shown the light????

Examples

PH
API = 8.2  (hard to read colors)
Salifert = 8.0 (solid, no question)

Phosphate
API = 0
Salifert = less than .03

Nitrate
API= 5 or 10 (colors are exactly the same)
Salifert exactly between 2 and 5 (I'll call it a 3.5)

Calcium
This one was close, API turned blue, Salifert did not and I pegged the scale.
API = 480
Salifert = greater than 500

So my question is... Does everyone use Salifert?  I assume that the prices are higher as the accuracy is better.

Opinions????

I liked Salifert more, as I'm sure you already know :)

I think Salifert is a better test and more accurate for things that matter; mg, cl, Dkh, p04, n03
90g SPS and LPS reef tank, 35g sump, ceramic rock by The Alternative Reef, Neptune Apex w 2 X EB8's, Moonlight module, ATI Sunpower Dimmable 8 X 39W T5's, Octopus Extreme 160 skimmer, PM Kalkwasser Reactor, 2 X Vortech MP40's, Geo 618 Ca reactor

Various thriving montipora, acropora, stylopora, wellsophyllia, blastomussa, hammer, anchor, and frogspawn, lobophyllia, rhizotrychus, pavona, scroll, and pagoda SPS and LPS corals, but no fish because I was too stupid to QT...

Most use Salifert and the latest trend is Hanna Checker's for Alk, Phos, Nitrite & the new Calcium which is soon to be added to the Club toolbox.

I have used API for cal, KH,PH and nitrate and found them to pretty close when I checked them with the clubs test kits, but I purchased an API phosphate test and it was useless for reef tanks. It goes from 0 to 0.25 with nothing in between.
