My 80g frag style build

This has been a long time coming, I have been slowly collecting items since November and planning everything out. I won’t bore everyone with a long write up, I’ll just post some pics of the progress as I go. Starting back in November when i ordered the tank and finally picked it up 2mo later because of me procrastinating.
Display tank is 48”x24” and 16” tall
Sump is a 40gal breeder.








The stand is nowhere near done, I have a TON to do to it, adding WAY more supports, wrapping the outside of it with plywood and adding doors to the front and sides.

I’ll add a sheet of plywood to the bottom for sump to sit on. Also going to try and build a “cabinet” on the right side to hold controllers and contain all the wiring. Then paint then inside gloss white and illuminated with LEDs. Lots of work ahead still lol

Picked up some dry rock today from another member (daytonsalt83) and had to toss in the tank definitely getting more excited about this build. Going to plumb it up in my garage and test everything out before I bring it in the house.

It’s a standard size tank manufactured by aquarium masters with the seapora sticker on it. Only thing I kind of regret is I wish I would have bought the rimless style.

I looked them up and priced a custom tank. Sweet! I think i would do a double overflow 120, with low iron front glass, probably not this week lol

I really like shallow tanks, easier to work in when it’s only elbow deep lol.

I’m about to order a few plumbing parts (new bulkheads, loc-line return line with a RFG. And get it plumbed up.... then figure out this stand. I’m not happy with the idea I originally had. So back to the drawing board for a stand. But, the 2x4 stand can be temporary while it’s in the garage lol.

Just checking in to let everyone know I’m still working on this. Added more supports to the stand, sheet of birch on the bottom for the sump to sit on. Now that the “structure” of the stand is done, I will start making it look way nicer.

I have also been collecting a bunch of plumbing items, waiting on my order from BRS on the 22nd and I can finally water test this!

Plumbed... I think. Unless anyone sees any issues.  Ran out of 3/4” pvc, using plastic hose for now until I get another piece of pvc. Changed the overflow to a herbie style, and ran a return on the other side.  Using the gate valve to control flow, also added the ball valve to easily shut off flow and not have to fine tune the gate valve.

Flexible tubing from the return pump seems like it would make maintenance easier. I’m a fan of the flex tube exactly how you have it now.

The second pipe (Trickle pipe) needs to be about an 2” lower so it is about an 1” below the teeth. That will determine the water height in the overflow box. At that height the water will be a bit to high and won’t keep the water surface in the tank clean. Other then that it is exactly how I would have plumbed it as well.

Awesome! That’s easy to change. Going to glue it all up tonight.

i like the threaded standpipes , because the ability to remove them for maintenance is useful
